Still floating on a high from this year’s record-breaking rodeo season, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) is gearing up for an even greater season next year. As season tickets for the 2023 shows have become available for purchase, the HLSR has announced new program updates that avid local cowpokes can start looking forward to now.
When is Go Texan Day?
The unofficial kickoff of the HLSR, Go Texan Day—a citywide celebration encouraging Houstonians to saddle up in their Western gitup—will take place Friday, February 24. Ahead of the month-long celebration, rodeo-goers will also be able to participate in the Rodeo Roundup at Houston City Hall and trail rides at Memorial Park.

When is the Downtown Rodeo Parade?
The city of Houston will not have to wait until opening day to partake in other family-fun activities, either. Other pre-Rodeo Houston events include the Downtown Rodeo Parade on Saturday, February 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Beginning at the corner of Bagby and Walker, family and friends can watch as the decorative floats pass by, weaving through the downtown streets until the route ends at Lamar and Bagby. This year, Barrleman Leon Coffee will lead the charge as the Grand Marshall.

The HLSR gates will be officially open from February 28 until March 19, with a total of 20 marquee performances on the Rodeo stage during the span of the 2023 season. Country star Parker McCollum is the opener, and American Idol star Lauren Daigle has been announced as the second performer. Country singer Cody Jinks and The Chainsmokers have also been announced.
What food will be at the Houston Rodeo?
Although some come to Rodeo Houston for fairground activities and live shows, the foodie experience is a true staple of this hometown hoedown. The World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest will also be held before the official opening of HLSR, on February 23-25; come grab a plate of hot and sizzling barbecue with all the fixings—whether that’s baked beans or potato salad—even if you have to endure the classic line dance, because the food is just that good. This year’s rodeo-goers were able to get their fix of festival favorites like funnel cakes, corn dogs, sausage-on-a-stick, and fried desserts; expect more of that in 2023, hopefully along with reprises of new 2022 additions like the nation’s best burgers, Trill Burgers (as crowned by Good Morning America), and Darlin’s Fried Chicken.
What’s new with the livestock show?
While the 2023 music performance lineup isn’t set in stone, the livestock show portion of Rodeo Houston is upping the ante next year: the rodeo will add the Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo in Rosenberg and the Waller County Fair & Rodeo in Hempstead as new local qualifiers, replacing the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa. Competition champions from each respective rodeo will be offered an invitation to compete in 2023.

A 20-day tournament-style super series competition will also be introduced to crown event champions in bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, and women’s barrel racing and breakaway roping. The previous one-day Wild Card round will now be split into a two-day event, eliminating the super shootout from the lineup. In another first, women’s breakaway roping events will be held 20 consecutive nights through the 2023 season.
Although we’re still six months out from the 2023 season commencing, we can already smell the aroma of tender turkey legs roasting on the grill. Watch this space for more updates as Rodeo Houston season rides upon us.
