When Is Wednesday Addams Birthday

ooc: This is a great question, and one that doesn’t have a certain answer.

I can tell you that in the cartoon remake of The Addams Family (1973), there is an episode titled “The Roller Derby Story“ (s01xe14) that is about Wednesday having a 13th birthday party.

No specific mention of the day (as in the actual day number, not day of the week), month or year of Wednesday’s birth is made during any version of The Addams Family that I know of. Since her name is Wednesday Friday Addams, perhaps she was born on one of those days.

Charles Addams created her in 1938, and as all Addams’ are, she’s proved to be long lived, thankfully. Charles meant for her to be “Wednesday’s Child Full of Woe” based on the poem. That leaves Wednesday to describe her personality (which he intended), and Friday to describe the day she was born, most likely, which is in another version of the poem. I vaguely recall Gomez mentioning that Wednesday was indeed born on a Friday in the original series. I will link the specific episode if I can recall it later. I would lean toward her birthday being on a Friday, and probably a 13th of some month.

There are only 1-3 Friday the 13ths a year, and it can only occur in months that begin on a Sunday. Friday the 13th being a pretty special day all around, and given the above reasoning, I would say her birthday falls on that day.

Given her temperament, I’d say she’s a capricorn. Her apathy, intense and highly successful training and breeding of her champion spiders, and her love of digging in her graveyard all point to her most likely being a winter born capricorn baby.

So…

Let’s say her birthday is January 13th.

If you insist on having a year, from 1900 to now, there have been January, Friday the 13ths in the following years:

1900, 1905, 1911, 1922, 1928, 1933, 1939 (the year after Charles Addams created her), 1950, 1956, 1961, 1967, 1978, 1984, 1989, 1995, 2006, and 2012.

I’d pick 1933, because she was about six years old when she first appeared in Charles’ comics in 1939. (The first comic published was on April 6th, 1938 and had Morticia and Lurch in it, both unnamed characters at the time. Charles’ next comic wouldn’t be published until a year later. Wednesday and Puglsey wouldn’t get comic publishing time until 1944, and only about half of Charles’ comics were published.)
