ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The first week of April will be hugely important in the internationally watched criminal trial of acclaimed rapper Young Thug in Atlanta.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville has set tentative plans to consider a motion from some of Young Thug’s co-defendants to limit the number of future witnesses, as well as a motion from the rapper’s most visible attorney, Brian Steel, over a recent Georgia Supreme Court ruling.

A motion filed March 20 by attorneys representing Deamonte Kendrick – aka Yak Gotti – asked Glanville to to limit the number of witnesses prosecutors still plan on calling in what is becoming Georgia’s longest trial in history.

“The state, after originally proposing a witness list of over 700 witnesses, has a list of over 400 witnesses it intends to present at trial,” the motion said. “To date, the state has presented approximately 40 witnesses since presentation of witnesses began at the end of November. At the present, representative state, it will take until approximately until October 2026 to complete the presentation of state’s witnesses. Thus, the present trial will take well into at least mid-2027 to complete.”

“This is simply untenable for the remaining 15 jurors or the defendants who remain jailed without bond, and the presentation of another 360 witnesses by the state would cause undue delay, would be a waste of time, and would amount to needless presentation of cumulative evidence,” the motion said.

Glanville is also tentatively set to rule on a motion by Brian Steel and Keith Adams that references a Georgia Supreme Court ruling that overturned the conviction of a man convicted of killing a guard at a Warner Robins, Georgia, nightclub in 2019.

During Morgan Baker’s trial, prosecutors showed the jury a clip from a rap video for the song “Ghetto Angels,” showing Baker holding a handgun. Baker was later convicted of shooting Tamarco Head, but the Georgia Supreme Court ruled in March the video wasn’t relevant to the shooting and may have influenced the jury.

Glanville has already ruled some of Young Thug’s lyrics will be conditionally admitted as evidence. In 2022, Fulton County prosecutors included lyrics from the rapper, referencing drugs and violence, as evidence of an “overt act in furtherance of a (gang) conspiracy.”

Steel has asked Glanville to recuse himself – twice – and also has moved – again, twice – for a mistrial.

Young Thug – real name Jeffery Williams – is on trial in Fulton County, Georgia in a massive RICO case involving himself and five other defendants. Prosecutors allege Williams and his co-defendants are members of the YSL gang, while defense attorneys argue YSL is simply the name of a record label, Young Stoner Life.

Williams is facing eight criminal counts under a federal law that was originally enacted to fight organized crime. Georgia is one of 33 states that has its own RICO law, but in the Peach State, the alleged criminal enterprises do not have to have existed as long as the federal law.

Williams is also charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute; possession of codeine with intent to distribute; possession of cocaine; possession of a firearm; and possession of a machine gun.
