Fluffiest Chocolate Chip Pancakes

The fluffiest chocolate chip pancakes start with a pancake batter recipe that yields incredible pancakes. The chocolate chips are added once the batter is prepped.

Fluffy pancake batter is on the thick side. But don’t worry, you’ll flip the pancakes over and cook the second side, and that’s when each pancake will rise nice and high.

You can add the chocolate chips after the batter is formed or right on the griddle, sprinkled on top after you scoop the batter -that’s totally up to you!

Chocolate Chip Pancake Ingredients

You’ll find the measurements for the ingredients for these chocolate chip pancakes in the recipe card; but before you go rogue and substitute anything, I’ll share what works and doesn’t:

  • All-purpose flour: traditional, all-purpose flour is what’s used for pancakes. Follow this recipe for the best gluten-free pancakes and simply add the chocolate chips to the batter.
  • Baking powder: an essential ingredient for pancakes. Use this recipe for pancakes without baking powder if you’ve run out.
  • Salt: a little to enhance the flavor of the batter. Omit it if your butter is salted.
  • Sugar: balances out the baking powder and gives these a homemade flavor we love.
  • Milk: traditional dairy milk or non-dairy milk works here. If you’re out of milk, here is my recipe for pancakes without milk.
  • Egg: used to bind these ingredients together. Essential for pancakes. That said, here is my post on the best egg substitutes for pancakes.
  • Butter: a little goes a long way, don’t skip it. Gives the batter flavor.
  • Chocolate chips: the star of the show and what brought you to this recipe! Chips or chunks, any will work!

You don’t have to go to an old-fashioned diner to enjoy great chocolate chip pancakes at home. Here are a few helpful notes within each simple step of the recipe:

  1. Measure and mixMeasure the dry ingredients first into the bowl and then add the wet ingredients. Once your batter is cohesive, add the chocolate chips in!
  2. Cook the pancakesFirst, heat your non-stick pan or griddle over medium-high heat. Once it’s hot, grease it and immediately pour the pancake batter. Wait to flip until the edges are defined and bubbles form. When you flip them, don’t press them down. Remove them from the pan and keep the pancakes warm while you finish the rest of the batch.
  3. ServeStack them high and enjoy topped with your favorite pancake syrups or toppings.

When Do I Add the Chocolate Chips to the Pancake Batter?

You can add the chocolate chips to the batter bowl or manually place them over the batter when making pancakes. If adding them on top of the pancakes while they cook, they might burn a little once you flip them so add a little batter on top. When adding to the bowl, try to scoop an even amount per pancake.

How Do You Keep Chocolate Chips from Melting in Pancakes

To avoid your chocolate chips from melting after you flip your pancakes, mix them into the batter or pour a little batter on top of the chips after you place them on the pancakes on the pan. You can also store your chocolate chips in the freezer so they go in frozen and turn out just right!

Success Secrets for Fluffy Pancakes

For years, strangers on the internet have commented below my YouTube videos, calling me the “pancake mom” and “pancake queen.” The reason: I love pancakes and always share tips to avoid the most common pancake mistakes.

Here are some tips to ensure your chocolate chip pancakes are awesome:

Heat the pan firstPouring batter on a pan or skillet that isn’t hot enough will not give you those golden edges and crisp outer texture; instead, you’ll have to cook the pancakes longer, and they’ll be gummier.

Adjust the heatIf the pancake bottoms are dark but the batter at the top is too runny, your heat is too hot. Reduce the heat.

Test one pancakeIf you’ve made swaps or substitutions to the recipe and have doubts, cook a single pancake before making adjustments (a little more liquid, etc).

Best Toppings for Chocolate Chip Pancakes

While these tend to disappear as they are, you can up the ante on these chocolate chip pancakes by topping them with banana slices, some pancake syrup, or your favorite pancake toppings.
