You read that title right, Expansion Industries have just announced that they will be opening up a new facility in what used to be the Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant. The new facility will be located near the company’s headquarters in Carrollton, TX. With the last couple of years being nearly hopeless for handloaders in terms of primer availability, this new facility may prove to be not only extremely lucrative for Expansion Industries but extremely beneficial to the reloading community which should now have another primer selection option over the big four existing producers.

At the time of writing, Expansion Industries has already begun preparation of the site for the new operation and has also begun a large push to fill job positions. The company is hosting a job fair on January 29th in the area and in total they wish to fill more than 400 people by 2023.
We have invested $100 million into the site so far,” said Richard A. Smissen, owner, Expansion Industries. “This is all about supply and demand. There is serious demand in the industry for this product and right now, for various reasons, the supply chain is falling woefully short. So we are getting ready to do our part to help out with that issue.
According to Mr. Smissen, the facility is already well suited to the future operation. Previously, the Lone Star Army Ammunition plant was under a massive cleanup operation conducted by the EPA and the site was scheduled to be deleted from the National Priorities List in 2010 but still remains on the list as of writing. However, despite this, the site was recently reviewed in 2021 and is ready for anticipated reuse by Expansion Industries. Before Expansion Industries rolled in, the plan was to direct the I-69 Corridor through the facility.

Expansion Industries currently produces all types of small arms ammunition and reloading components with a heavy emphasis on supporting the 2nd Amendment first according to Mr. Smissen:
Every box of our ammunition, we make it clear it is about freedom,” he said. “The first 10 Amendments of our Constitution lay it all out, our liberties. And the 2nd Amendment is about the freedom of an American to be armed, to defend against any who would seek to take away that freedom. And should our 2nd Amendment fall, there is nothing to prevent the rest of it from being taken. We are a faith-based company and we make that clear. We are doing what we can to take a stand for American freedoms, support shooting sports and with this facility, we will be taking it all to the next level.
With a new primer producer stepping into the game, my hope is that we will start to see a lot more competition to get primers back onto shelves and at more reasonable prices. There are a lot of hurdles, red tape and production difficulties to get through to be a major primer producer but the Lone Star site seems to be perfectly suited for it and Expansion Industries has already taken big steps towards this goal. What are your thoughts on how this new primer venture will turn out? Thoughts welcome down below!
