Hurricane Lee remained a major storm Sunday, slowing its path but maintaining sustained winds of 110 mph as it moved north-northwest in the Atlantic Ocean about 270 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters said steady restrengthening is possible over the next few days.
It is expected to pass well to the north of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico into early next week.
Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected to develop along most of the East Coast of the U.S. on Sunday and Monday, and those conditions will worsen over the course of the week, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane-force winds on Sunday extended outward up to 40 miles from Lee’s center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles.
Because it wouldn’t likely reach the East Coast until late next week, forecasters don’t yet know what the impact might be for New Jersey. But at this point most spaghetti computer models predict Lee will likely swing northeast out to sea, putting Bermuda at risk and making landfall in the Maritime provinces of eastern Canada. Wind shear may also cause it to weaken over time.
Forecasters expect a trough, or upper level atmospheric disturbance, to arrive over the eastern United States that will help the mid-latitude westerly winds push Hurricane Lee away from the East Coast.
Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands should largely be spared
The British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have a small chance of feeling sustained winds from Lee Saturday and Sunday.

As Lee moves north of the northern Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, the potential for tropical storm conditions to occur in the islands decreases. But swells generated by Lee are expected to reach portions of the Lesser Antilles on Friday, and the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, the Bahamas, and Bermuda this weekend, causing life-threatening rip currents.

New Jersey avoided impacts from Hurricane Idalia last week, other than some dangerous rip currents in the Atlantic Ocean that caused a danger for swimmers over the Labor Day weekend.
Expect above normal tropic storm activity
Idalia began in the Gulf of Mexico off of Cuba, not far from the islands likely to be most impacted by Lee. Idalia eventually traveled east across northern Florida and into Georgia and South Carolina, where it caused flooding and destruction.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters expected above-normal tropical storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean during this hurricane season, which runs through Nov. 30.
Record-high surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean could make hurricanes this fall more likely, according to New Jersey State Climatologist David Robinson.
