When Will I-90 Reopen In South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A winter storm impacted much of South Dakota on Christmas Day and continued to impact travelers on Tuesday.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation has announced both lanes of Interstate 90 from Mitchell to Rapid City reopened at 10 a.m. Tuesday. That came after the DOT announced closures of Interstate 90 from Wall to Mitchell starting at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

No Travel Advisories remain in place on some highways across the state.

While I-90 has reopened, travelers are advised that the combination of heavy snow and strong winds are causing snow-packed and ice-covered roads along with blizzard-like conditions.

The DOT said travelers should not use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures.

In northeastern South Dakota, the South Dakota Highway Patrol said shared a photo near Summit where visibility was reduced because of fog. Authorities said drivers should use their lights, slow down and increase following distances.

In Brookings County, downed trees and galloping power lines have been reported which may have caused power outages, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
