Utah will see “multiple rounds” of significant snow this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Several winter storm warnings are in effect through Sunday, stretching from the state’s Idaho border down to about Nephi. And winter storm advisories cover an even wider area of northern and central Utah.

Weekend snow projections include:

• The Wasatch Mountains could see 20-30 inches, with higher amounts possible in the upper Cottonwood Canyons.

• The Wasatch Back could see 8-16 inches, with higher amounts possible in the Ogden Valley.

• The northern Wasatch Front and Cache Valley could see 3-7 inches, with higher amounts possible on the benches.

• The Salt Lake and Utah valleys could see 1-3 inches, with 3-5 inches possible on the benches.

Snow levels can be hard to predict. The weather service released “expected” estimates and “high end” estimates for several cities, including:

• In Salt Lake City, 2.1 inches are expected, with 5.7 inches possible on the high end.

• In Sandy, 4.5 inches are expected, with 9.5 inches possible on the high end.

• In Provo, 5.2 inches are expected, with 9.5 inches possible on the high end.

• In Ogden, 4.6 inches are expected, with 11.4 inches possible on the high end.

• In Brigham City, 7.3 inches are expected, with 14 inches possible on the high end.

• In Layton, 5.8 inches are expected, with 12.8 inches possible on the high end.

• In Park City, 15.7 inches are expected, with 20.6 inches possible on the high end.

Winter driving conditions are expected all weekend, especially in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons and over Logan Summit. Periods of road snow are also likely over Parleys Summit on Interstate 80, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Expect traction restrictions on mountain routes.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the winter storm warnings state.

Storm timeline:

Snow levels are expected to rise throughout the weekend storm rather than dwindle, according to the weather service.

On Friday, rounds of snow were expected midday, then late evening.

Saturday morning should see a lull before heavy mountain snowfall. Snow will also fall in the valleys, but could transition to rain Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Mountain snow will continue Sunday, with rain more likely in the valleys.

Throughout the storm, high temperatures will hover in the 30s across much of northern Utah. On Monday, temperatures are expected to rise, with highs in the mid- to upper 40s forecast.

The weekend storm is expected to clear out the valley inversions that lingered across much of the Wasatch Front this week. But inversions will likely begin building again Monday.
