The Lincoln Lawyer is back in practice. Production has begun for the series’ long-awaited third season, and it’s already full of surprises. Deadline received first-look photos from the set, which show Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) standing in a wet suit and hanging out with his ex-wife, Maggie McPherson (Neve Campbell), at home.
But wait! Didn’t she leave for San Diego? Sure did. Clearly that doesn’t mean we won’t see her again. According to executive producers Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez, the images of Maggie are from a flashback. “While Season 3 of The Lincoln Lawyer is based on Michael Connelly’s novel The Gods of Guilt, we decided that a fun (and poignant) way to come into the season would be via a flashback sequence that gave us some insight into how Mickey Haller became Mickey Haller,” they said. “Not just the brilliant criminal defense lawyer but the husband, the father, and the man that he would come to be.”

So, what does that mean for Maggie? The producers haven’t confirmed a comeback, but we’ll get at least one glimpse of her life with Haller in season three. “There is no comparable flashback in the book,” Humphrey and Rodriguez continued. “So, we devised something that would also serve as a fitting introduction to the story of the season, both on a plot level but also emotionally. These images, of a young Mickey finishing up surfing before a life-changing day at work, as well as cuddling on the couch with his wife Maggie after putting their young daughter Hayley to bed, are from a pair of these flashback scenes that bookend the first episode and propel us into the rest of Season 3.” Clever. Season three will also include appearances from Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, Angus Sampson, Yaya DaCosta, Elliott Gould, Krista Warner, Fiona Rene, and Devon Graye.
So far, The Lincoln Lawyer has covered the events of the first two novels of the series written by Michael Connelly, but there’s plenty of material to work from. Connelly has four more books for Netflix to adapt: The Reversal, The Gods Of Guilt, The Law Of Innocence, and his latest, Resurrection Walk. Season two was a major turning point for Haller, as he was forced to grapple with his the possibility that his defendant was not innocent. Of course, it doesn’t matter if a lawyer thinks their client actually did the crime or not—but it certainly helps if their conscience is clean! In the third book, The Reversal, this leads Mickey to go down the dark path and try out prosecution.

In a statement announcing season three, Humphrey and Rodriguez said, “The audience response to the show has been so gratifying and wonderful, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to dive back into Michael Connelly’s universe and bring Mickey Haller and his world to the screen again.”
Netflix’s Vice President of Scripted Series, Netflix, US and Canada, added, “We’re thrilled to bring back The Lincoln Lawyer for a third season. Ted Humphrey and Dailyn Rodriguez have taken us deeper into Mickey Haller’s world, building out characters and stories that have connected with our global audience, and we look forward to seeing what they have in store for everyone’s favorite lawyer.”
I’ll leave you with a fun fact: Mickey’s half-brother is actually Harry Bosch in the novels. THE Bosch!? Yeah, I couldn’t believe it either. There’s only one catch. Titus Welliver plays Bosch in a completely separate Amazon Prime Video series, recently renewed as Bosch Legacy. Call me crazy, but could we finally get a crossover? Amazon, Netflix—let’s be friends here, please. Fans of legal dramas would go absolutely wild. I’ll cross my fingers in the back of my Lincoln.
