Rapper SPM Career?
SPM started out as a Christian rapper but felt he was becoming an outsider. In 1994 he began rapping and recording as South Park Mexican and SPM. In 1995, he co-founded his own record label, Dope House Records, with his brother Arthur Jr. and his friend Jose Antonio Garza of McAllen, Texas.
SPM released his debut album Hillwood in March 1995 as South Park Mexican (SPM). He promoted the first album for two years and began work on the second album in 1997. In March 1998, the second album “Hustle Town” was released. The album was a hit in Houston’s underground rap scene.

In February 2000, he signed a joint venture between his label and Universal Music Group which earned him a $500,000 advance and national distribution. Universal released three of his albums: Time is Money and The Purity Album (2000) and Never Change (2001). The Purity Album included the single “You Know My Name”, which peaked at #99 on the Billboard R&B chart and #31 on the rap chart.
San Antonio Express-News writer Ramiro Burr summarized South Park Mexican’s lyrical content in a 2001 profile: “SPM delivers raunchy lyrics about growing up in the barrio and living the party life. But he says he also focuses on working hard and having hope for a better life.”
His Universal work did not receive mainstream attention. Allmusic’s Jason Birchmeier said, “SPM’s hardcore rap proved too heavy for the masses.” Dope House has released two new albums he recorded during his imprisonment. 2006’s Devil’s Strike debuted at number 46 on the Billboard 200, followed by 2008’s The Last Chair Violinist. After a six-year hiatus, The Son of Norma was released on September 30, 2014.
