The award has only been given out once, way back in 1989, to honour the player considered the greatest of the previous three decades. Three sets of voting panels were created to decide on the winner: a France Football jury, a group of former Ballon d’Or winners, and a France Football readers poll.

Who has won the Super Ballon d’Or?

The 1989 award was won by Real Madrid great Alfredo Di Stefano. The former striker is still the only player to win the title.

Di Stefano won two Ballon d’Or awards, in 1957 and 1959, and is regarded by some as Madrid’s greatest ever player. He was a key part of a team that won five consecutive European Cups from 1956 to 1960.
