When You Aren’t Around I Sink Into The Ground

“DEATH” was originally teased as a 12 -second snippet released exclusively to Spotify announcing the return of Melanie Martinez, after she began her musical hiatus after releasing her sophomore album “K-12″. The song was released on March 17th, 2023. It was self-produced along with CJ Baran, who also produced songs such as “Cake” and “Pity Party.” After an hour of the snippet being up on Spotify, Melanie posted a snippet of the intro on Instagram.

The song is a metaphor for the human experience of life, death, and rebirth; a haunting and introspective exploration of death and the afterlife. Melanie sings about a spirit who has returned from the dead and is struggling to connect with the living. Despite the efforts of those left behind to draw the spirit back in, the barriers are too strong to overcome. The slow, sultry guitar-based verses capture the introspective nature of the spirit’s struggle to connect with the living, while the explosive, full rock chorus represents the spirit’s intense desire to make its presence felt. The chorus “Back from the Dead” emphasizes the theme of resurrection, which encourages listeners to view death as a natural part of the larger cycle of life, and the idea that death is not the end. In the intro “death is life, and life is death” is repeated, because death is a constant loop. We are all born and then we all die.

The pre-chorus reflects a spirit’s longing to be close to those they left behind and the weight of carrying the burden of death, while the personification of death itself as having given the spirit closure suggests that death is not something to fear but rather a necessary part of the process.

The outro, “Please, don’t ever worry, I know it’s morbid, but we all die one day,” brings the song to a hopeful conclusion. Death is inevitable, but the spirit has returned to remind us that death is not the end and that there is comfort in the knowledge that we will be reunited with our loved ones in the afterlife.

The song is a poignant meditation on mortality, the afterlife, and the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Its powerful lyrics and haunting melodies create a beautiful and thought-provoking piece of music that encourages listeners to contemplate the nature of their existence and embrace the idea that death is not the end.
