As May turns to June, many of us are looking forward to summer holidays. There’s one coming up toward the end of June that some of us tend to forget to mark on our calendars. Can you guess which holiday?

It’s Father’s Day. Before you forget, you should go and put it on your calendar. Though I wouldn’t be surprised if it slipped your mind. Unlike Mother’s Day, with more than a 100-year heritage, this celebration is relatively new. It wasn’t until 1972 that the Nixon administration proclaimed Father’s Day a national holiday.

Here’s everything you need to know about Father’s Day, including when it’s celebrated in Mexico.

Who invented Father’s Day?

The tradition of Father’s Day has its roots in the early 1900s, when two women proposed similar ideas to pay tribute to fatherhood.

In 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia Grace Golden Clayton proposed a tribute day after a mining accident that killed hundreds of men. The first documented Father’s Day celebration in U.S. history was held in their memory on Jul. 5.

On the west coast, the daughter of a single father proposed a similar idea in Spokane, Washington. In honor of her father, Sonora Smart Dodd initially wanted June 5, her father’s birthday, to be recognized as the day to celebrate fatherhood.

However, the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA chose the third Sunday of June in order to give people more time between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, according to The Farmer’s Almanac.

Is Father’s Day different every year?

Yes, it is every third Sunday of June, rather than a specific date. That’s how Father’s Day has been observed since President Lyndon B. Johnson’s proclamation to designate the holiday on this date in 1966, later made into a national holiday by President Richard Nixon in 1972.
