Things aren’t looking good for When Calls the Heart‘s “it” couple. The preview and teaser for tonight’s episode show the pair in a difficult situation that could impact their relationship forever. Will Elizabeth and Lucas break up on When Calls the Heart Season 10? Here’s everything that we know.

When Calls the Heart is Hallmark Channel’s drama series following Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high-society life who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley (now named Hope Valley), a small coal-mining town in western Canada where life is simple but not without its challenges. The show, which premiered in July 2014, is based on Janette Oke’s novel of the same title from her Canadian West book, and is currently in its tenth season.

Thatcher is currently engaged to Lucas Bouchard (Chris McNally). The couple officially got together at the end of Season 8 after she rejected Nathan Grant, a new Mountie of the RNWMP (Royal North-West Mounted Police). Grant professed his love to Elizabeth, but she didn’t reprecipitate his love, and she ultimately decided to be with Lucas.

But in Season 10, Episode 9, it looked like Elizabeth could have romantic feelings again for Nathan. She was distraught when he was taken hostage by a farmer. “I can’t do this again,” she told Henry Gowen (Martin Cummins) when she learned of the situation. “Not again.” Elizabeth’s first husband, Jack Thornton, was killed by a landslide while on a training mission in Fort Clay, which could be triggering feelings of loss for Elizabeth. Or, there could be unresolved romantic feelings there for Nathan.

Although Nathan returned to the town unharmed, Elizabeth found comfort in the library overcome with emotions. “I think perhaps you should give some thought to how you were feeling yesterday,” Gowen asked her. When Elizabeth told him that she was fine but was just worried about a friend, he responded: “You’re certain?” “I’m fine, Henry. You’re mistaken,” she stated before walking away.

But, was he mistaken? Now, the latest curveball in their relationship has us doubting a fairytale wedding after all.

Will Elizabeth and Lucas break up on When Calls the Heart Season 10? We’re not sure. But in the preview for Season 10, Episode 11, Lucas reveals that he is debating running against the Governor in the next election. He reminds Elizabeth that if he does run and win, he’ll be forced to move to Capitol City (and because they’re engaged, we assume that she’ll want to go with him).

“Just yesterday you were telling me you never wanted to leave Hope Valley,” Nathan also tells Elizabeth in the preview. “Nathan, this is bigger than me,” she says to him as he steps closer to her. It’s evident that Nathan isn’t going to let Elizabeth move out of Hope Valley without a fight.

The dramatic storyline comes as Elizabeth and Lucas have been noticeably growing apart. Wedding planning has not been a top priority, and in the last few episodes, she and Lucas haven’t had many scenes together. Instead, many of Elizabeth’s scenes are with Nathan. She also recently shot down Lucas’ offer to build her a new house, signaling that something might be on her mind.

Fans shared their theories about the suspected love triangle brewing in the comments. One even speculated that this could be a way to write Lucas out of the show. “I bet Lucas is leaving the show and he is leaving by looking like a hero… which he should he played a great part. But maybe he is done and ready to move on just like Jack…. thats why Elizabeth is struggling with feelings for Nathan,” one person wrote.

While another user stated that they will watch more episodes if Elizabeth is romantically interested in Nathan. “I stopped watching religiously when Elizabeth picked Lucas and haven’t watched in a while. Should I start watching again? Because I am Team Nathan all the way, but I can’t go through heartbreak of her picking Lucas again.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in July 2023, Krakow hinted that Season 10 would be a difficult one for her character. “Elizabeth goes through it this season. She has some emotional hurdles that she has to overcome,” the actress explained. “Her kid is growing up. Little Jack has all of these questions now about his father and that is a new challenge for Elizabeth. She has a lot on her plate. She is juggling a lot.”
