Yes, and the title comes from true crime author Ann Rule’s book A Rose for Her Grave and Other True Cases, which was published in 1993. Randy Roth is a convicted murderer who was charged with the death of his fourth wife Cynthia Baumgartner Roth. Cynthia’s death occurred during a family day trip to Lake Sammamish in Washington state. Randy and Cynthia paddled their inflatable raft out past where they could be seen, and Randy returned hours later with Cynthia’s lifeless body. He claimed that the wake from a passing speedboat caused the inflatable raft to flip, landing on top of Cynthia and drowning her. This story was debunked during the murder trial and Randy was sentenced to 50 years in prison for first degree murder.
Cynthia wasn’t the only one of Randy’s wives to die while on vacation, though. His second wife, Janis Roth, was found dead after falling off of Beacon Rock during a hiking trip. The details of Janis’ death were called into question at the time, as it was determined that she could not have fallen from where Randy claimed she’d fell. And as he did with Cynthia 10 years later, Randy quickly had Janis cremated.
Randy also may have tried to kill his third wife, the one between Janis and Cynthia. Donna Clift, wife #3, claimed that she filed for divorce after a rafting trip to the Skykomish River. Donna claims that Randy kept steering their inflatable raft across rapids and into sharp rocks. Donna survived the trip and filed for divorce.
