What are Vionic Shoes?

If you have never heard of Vionic Shoes this is a footwear brand that prides itself on creating comfortable and supportive shoes that help foot health.

Unlike many traditional shoe brands, Vionic Shoes have been created for people who are looking for shoes that can combat problematic foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis and overpronation.

Their shoes have features such as built-in orthotic inserts, arch support, and amazing cushioning. This is to help with the natural alignment of the foot. These features help to keep your feet stable and minimize discomfort so that your feet can walk in comfort. In fact, they are endorsed by the American Podiatric Medical Association because their shoes can help with foot problems.

The brand doesn’t just make shoes but also sandals, slippers, sneakers and boots which are not only comfortable but fashionable as well.

Vionic is one of my favorite brands of shoes because they have made such a difference to the foot pain that I used to experience because of plantar fasciitis and tendonitis in my foot. In fact, I have quite a collection of their flat ballet pumps and sneakers that I use for everyday wear.

Are Vionic Shoes Made In China?

Most of the shoes that are sold in the United States are made in China and Vionic is no exception.

Whilst Vionic have discussed moving production to the United States currently the vast majority of their footwear is made in China and also in Taiwan.

Is Vionic An American Company?

The founder of Vionic shoes was Australian but currently, the brand’s headquarters is based in San Rafael in California.

The address of the headquarters is:

San Rafael,

4040 Civic Center Dr

#430,

United States

Who Owns Vionic Shoes?

Whilst the brand was founded by an Australian it is now owned by Caleres. Caleres bought the brand in 2018 to add to its stable of shoe brands which include Dr. Scholl’s, Naturalizer, Sam Edelman, Allen Edmonds and Vince.

The Caleres brand was created in St Louis in 1878 and was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1914.

Its headquarters are still based in St Louis with the address:

8300 Maryland Avenue

St. Louis,

Missouri 63105

When Did Vionic Shoes Come Out?

If you want to know a short history of the brand the shoes were first developed in 1979 by an Australian podiatrist called Dr Phillip Vasyli.

It was during his time as a podiatrist that he noticed the biomechanical impact that overpronation had on his patients. Recognizing that many of the solutions to the problem could be expensive or take too long he created an orthotic that used surfboard molding techniques that could be inserted into shoes to create a natural footprint.

This orthotic helped to reduce foot problems and give people relief from plantar fasciitis and other conditions. Eventually, this orthotic was incorporated into shoes that had built-in support already inside.

In 1991 he continued to innovate and created the Orthaheel orthotic and by 2007 the brand had expanded into the United States.

Phillip is not only the founder of the company but also its current chairman.

What is Special About Vionic?

Vionic shoes have a number of features that make them so special. Here are some of the most important that makes them so comfortable for people who have less-than-ideal foot health.

The Orthotic Support

Every Vionic shoe comes with a special orthotic support inside the shoe. This insole can be removed and replaced if you want to change it.

These insoles use biomechanical technology to help support your foot arch and create a proper foot alignment.

This orthotic insole is I believe what made such a difference to my feet because it helped address overpronation which was causing my foot pain.

Cushioning and Comfort

Due to my foot problems, I need comfortable shoes with lots of cushioning. I simply can’t be bothered anymore to spend ages breaking shoes in. I want comfortable footwear from the moment I first put them on and this is what this brand is great at.

These have a soft flexible sole and great footbed which means that I feel comfortable in them straight away. They are now one of my go-to shoe brands for everyday use.

Style

It used to be that when you bought a shoe to relieve foot pain that had orthotic inserts then you were stuck with a really frumpy design.

Somehow shoe manufacturers thought it was ok to create an ugly shoe if you had foot pain and you would tolerate it because it would stop your feet from hurting.

Vionic footwear has woken up to the untapped market for stylish sandals, shoes, boots and slippers which also help your feet. Whilst all of their shoes might not be to my taste there are enough fashionable designs that I can choose from that work for me such as these ballet flats.

Foot Health

Whilst Vionic shoes look good the company has never forgotten that foot health is where its focus should lie. This is why the shoes are so popular because they solve a problem.

Vionic offers solutions to foot alignment problems and flat feet and can help if you have bunions, heel pain from plantar fasciitis or tendonitis or shin splits.

Quality

Whilst Vionic footwear isn’t cheap I don’t mind paying a little extra because the brand uses quality materials and the shoes last for a long time.

I don’t want to buy shoes for my foot problems that don’t last so I’m pleased I have found a brand that uses quality durable leather. I’ve tried lesser cheaper brands but in most cases, I return to Vionic shoes time and time again because they give me maximum support, don’t give me foot pain and look good for a reasonably long time. These are my Minna ballet flats and this is the third pair I’ve bought so the brand is definitely doing something right.

What Are They Made Of?

Vionic shoes, sandals, slippers and sneakers are made from a number of different materials depending on the style and type of shoes that you buy.

The orthotics are generally made from EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate) which is flexible and gives the supportive cushioning that I love. I find that the footbed of the sandal tends to be incredibly comfortable underfoot because of the orthotics which are not harsh or hard under my feet.

As they have some give the insole should be replaced every 12-18 months but so far I haven’t found a problem with Vionic Orthotics at all. The EVA arch support is one of the main reasons why I find the shoes so easy to wear as soon as I get a new pair.

Apart from the EVA element of the footwear, you may find that many outsoles are made from rubber whilst the uppers can vary from leather to suede, cotton canvas, or polyester terrycloth for slippers.

Vionic gives a comprehensive description of the materials used in each of its products on its website so you can find materials that work for you.

Popular Styles

Vionic shoes have a wide range of footwear that you can choose from. Here are some of the most popular styles that the brand offers.

Spark Caroll – Women’s Ballet Flat

I have a number of the Vionic ballet flats including the Caroll design and the Minna. These are the shoes that I wear regularly if I’m going to work or for an evening out.

Even though these have leather uppers the leather isn’t hard and doesn’t hurt my feet at all. The arch support helps my plantar fasciitis and tendonitis and I have never had to break these in, unlike some other shoes.

You can choose from a number of colors in this design so you should get a pair in style that you like.

Vionic Women’s Walker Classic Comfortable Leisure Shoes

One of the other most popular designs is Vionic sneakers. Sneakers are perfect for long walks and casual wear around the neighborhood.

I own a number of different types of Vionic sneakers which have all been incredibly comfortable and easy to wear when I’m planning to walk a little further than normal. I should add that the brand has a large number of different styles and colors so it should be easy to find something that works for you.

Jaxen Women’s Arch Supportive Combat Boots

Vionic boots are also great for winter and are just as comfortable as their sneakers and shoes.

As you can see from these Jaxen boots the styles are very on-trend as well. This matters because not everyone wants orthotic shoes that look frumpy. Other brands should take note as there is a middle ground between pain-free footwear and style.
