This is a place for lost things. A family of choice, rather than blood.”

I will start by saying that I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank so much J. Rose and the team over Valentine PR for sending a copy my way!

I’m on the run.Desperate and afraid. After breaking free from the gilded cage of my abusive marriage, I have nothing to my name but a letter from a long-lost relative.Come home, Willow.Your family is waiting for you.I sacrificed everything to flee for the tiny town of Briar Valley and its promise of a better life for my young daughter.Hope often takes the unlikeliest of forms, but I didn’t expect to find it nestled among the rugged, snow-capped mountains.Nor did I intend to surrender my heart to three tortured mountain men, hiding from their own grief in the thick forest of pine trees.Briar Valley offers a home to all lost things, but at what cost?I have to make an impossible choice.Do I spend the rest of my life running from the demons in my past, or should I risk it all in the name of love?

J. Rose is an author I’ve discovered this year and with every book I read, she’s cementing herself as an all-time favourite. Where Broken Wings Fly is a beautifully dark romance that took my breath away. Looking at the tropes, I wasn’t sure how a why choose, dark romance was going to work with small town, but wow she did it.

Where Broken Wings Fly follows Willow and her daughter Arianna. The pair are on the run as Willow escapes the shackles of an abusive marriage she was particularly sold into. She’s doing everything she can to give her daughter a safe place to grow up. After her father overdosed and left her with a ton of debt, she thought she was alone in the world until she received a note from her grandmother begging for her to come home to Briar Valley. Armed with nothing but that note and a will to survive Willow manages to escape Mexico and find her way to the small Welsh town all without her powerful and dangerous husband finding her. Willow and Arianna finally have a place to call home and have the freedom to heal. But is this town high in the Welsh Mountains remote enough to keep her husband from finding her?

Willow has to be the strongest character I’ve read. Please check your trigger warnings as there are some on-page assault scenes. The sheer amount of abuse that she has endured all because she was young and had no way to escape her druggie father’s debtors. Everything she does is for her daughter. She spent years scheming to get fake passports and enough cash for herself and Arianna to get to safety. It was wonderful getting to see Willow have the space to breathe and start to heal. After everything she’s been through, she deserves the world.

We all know that I am a sucker for a why choose romance and this story does it so well. While in Briar Valley, Willow meets and is drawn to Killian, Zach and Micha. The trio have dealt with their own share of trauma and hardship and, frankly, their fraying family bonds are the only things keeping them together. Willow fits so seamlessly into their little family. What I love about the romance and their dynamic is that they help each other to heal. I’m not saying that they are expecting the other people in the relationship to fix them but rather that they have found a space where they feel safe enough to put down their walls and be able to move through their grief and trauma to be able to start the healing process. It is beautiful. This is a slow-burn romance but there are a few spicy scenes sprinkled towards that end that were seriously hot.

Again, I’m not normally one for kids in romances, but Arianna stole my heart. Like Willow, she was trapped by the whims of her father. Watching Arianna in Briar Valley become the bright bubble child she was never allowed to be melted my heart. She is the sweetest. Also love how she has got Killian, Zach and Micha wrapped around her little finger.

I am a city girl to my core but the descriptions of Briar Valley, left me wanting to pack up and move. This commune is a safe haven for those who need to find a place to heal or catch their breath and who haven’t found support in the real world. The town is run by Lola Castlemore, Willow’s grandmother. There is a complicated relationship there, but I am hoping the pair can sort through their secrets and hurts in the sequel.

I love that this takes place in the same world as J. Rose’s Sabre Security and Blackwood Institute books. We get a small cameo, but with that ending, I have my fingers crossed we get to see a few more cameos in the sequel.

I had a feeling Where Broken Wings Fly was going to end this way even if I had my fingers and toes crossed it wouldn’t. I don’t know what this means for Willow and Arianna’s safety or how Willow and her guys are going to get their HEA but I cannot wait to see it all unfold in Where the Wild Things Grow. Highly recommend this one if you like dark romance that why choose and has small-town vibes. Again, be kind to yourself and check the triggers to make sure this is for you.
