Where Can I Sell My Tools For Cash

Planning on selling some tools? Here you can learn about several different methods to get some cash for your unwanted tools.

Selling Privately

If your looking to sell privately we recommend using websites such as,

eBay

eBay is an online auction service. Its a great place to sell and if your looking to get the most money for your stuff, then this is probably the best option for you. Items can be listed as a “Buy It Now” or put up for auction over 3, 5, 7 and 10 days.

If you are looking to sell quickly, we recommend using the auction option. You also have an option to set a reserve price, so if your items were not to achieve a certain price you would not be obliged to sell.

“Buy It Now” is a great option, if you do not mind waiting a few weeks. You can usually achieve a better price this way, as you are giving more time for potential buyers to arise.

To begin selling on eBay you will require signing up to 2 accounts, eBay themselves and PayPal which is the preferred payment gateway of eBay, in order to send and receive payments.

To list items on eBay is usually free, but you will have to pay fees if your items sell. This is usually around 10% of the total sale price. Paypal also charges their fees for processing payments at 3.4% plus £0.20 on every transaction. Selling a 120 piece tool set at £100 and you will be looking at getting around £86.40

Gumtree

Gumtree is a free alternative to eBay and is usually more suited to selling items more locally.

Signing up for an account is very easy to do and they do not charge you any fees when listing or selling.

Unlike eBay you are allowed to include contact information in listings such as a telephone number. This can be helpful as a buyer might like to speak to you about your item and arrange a pick up if local.

If you’re new to selling online, we think this is the easiest way to get started. However you may not get as much exposure as eBay and it may take you longer to sell your tools.

Facebook

Most people have a facebook account these days, but did you also know you can advertise your stuff for sale on there too?

Selling this way is free and potential buyers can contact you using facebooks messenger service.

Other Options

Advertise in local newspapers or magazines.

Are you a member of a forum? Many forums these days have “for sale” pages. This can be a great alternative to the other options listed.

Sending Items

Sending items in the post can be expensive, the post office is great for items under 2KG. However tools can be heavy and if sending multiple tools this could work out to be a very expensive option.

Sending a 10KG parcel via the post office would cost over £20.

As a cheaper option for heavier tooling, we suggest looking at these online parcel comparison sites, where the same parcel could be sent for around £5-8.
