NFL Hall of Famer and Chicago Bears legend, Dick Butkus, not to be confused with former teammate Mike Ditka, died this week. Butkus’s family announced Wednesday, October 5 that the NFL icon passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Malibu, California.
But before Butkus permanently retired to the West Coast, he retired to Florida in 1973. And he didn’t live in Palm Beach or Billionaire Bunker. He lived on a fairly rural piece of property just north of DeLand, Florida, in a single-story ranch-style home.

Coming off of the heels of an explosive exit from the NFL in 1973, Butkus didn’t feel at home in Chicago anymore. And before making his final home in California, he and his wife, Helen, came straight from the Windy City to the Sunshine State.
Is Dick Butkus’ former Florida home for sale?
Butkus lived in Florida following his retirement in 1973, through the early 80s, when he and Helen moved to Malibu, where he was at one point neighbors with the late Olivia Newton-John and Cher.
“Butkus didn’t feel at home in Chicago anymore, so he moved to Florida, dismayed about his Bears experience,” Pro Football Hall of Fame selectors board member and senior writer for The Athletic Dan Pompei wrote for Butkus’s obituary in The Athletic.
“When he retired, his wife kept mementos from his playing days, but they were stored in a Florida barn and many were damaged,” Pompei wrote. “Butkus threw everything into a dumpster.”

Butkus’ former home and the barn where his Chicago Bears mementos were kept in are not for sale, as someone currently lives there. But Zillow has photos of the property and inside the 10,400 square-foot house. Its Zestimate is $849,900.
