Where Do Fairies Live

People often wonder how fairies live and why it’s so hard to find them when they share part of our world. Due to their incredibly discreet nature and tiny size, it is nearly impossible to come across one. However, we do know a few things about their living habits and natural trends.

How Do Fairies Live?

Many fairies like to live in the deepest parts of forests and really enjoy living near lakes and rivers. Because so, some lakes, rivers, and even streams have been given fairy names such as “Sailor Stream” or “Penny Lake”.

Trees and plants are often used to build fairy homes. This is because fairies love trees! They love the color green and enjoy spending time in nature.

Fairies are very tiny – inches tall – much smaller than your average mouse or snake. These magical creatures have butterfly wings too which they like to show off at parties and fairs. Some are known to have black hair and enjoy making dresses out of flowers. It would not be unusual to find one dancing to fairy music along a fairy path around grass circles.

But remember, some fairies can have a bit of a mean streak. So, should you happen across one – stay alert and try to avoid bad luck.

How are fairies born?

When you think about the way fairies live and the existence of fairies, you can’t help but wonder how they come into life. As they are mysterious creatures, we don’t know much about them and their history, but there are a few theories on how they reproduce

Fairies are born through magic and I’m not talking about pixie dust. It is believed that fairies were born when the first butterfly kissed a flower.

When fairies become too old, (or if they’re just bored!) they will often travel to the top of mountains where fairy heaven is located and live there for all eternity! Fairy heaven can only be accessed by these creatures or guardian angels.

Another thought is that they fly into the sky and become stars! Folklore has documentation of fairies doing just that once they become very tired of life on Earth. So next time you look up at the night sky and see twinkling fairies – just know that you are being looked over.

Some fairies, such as pixies and flower fairies, come into existence with the first laugh of a newborn baby. Others are created by the Universe just like a human soul is created. And still, there are types of fairies – elves, for example – whose physical characteristics resemble humans, so they reproduce the same way we do.

How long can fairies live?

It’s easy to mistake fairies for immortal beings because they live so much longer than humans. On average, a fairy can decide to live for up to 1500 years. That goes for Tinker fairies, Irish Fairy, water-talent fairies, light-talent fairies, tinker-talent fairies, animal-talent fairies, and fairy folk in general.

They don’t age and don’t get sick, so living for a thousand years is definitely not a burden to them. When they are ready to move on – meaning they feel like they’ve done it all in this physical world – it seems as if the light and the life simply go out of them. Fae can die a violent death, but that’s rare as they are hard to kill.

What is a fairy home called?

You may have heard about fairies and fairytale castles but did you know that fairy folklore tells us that they actually live in their own fairy homes?

A fairy home might be a natural cave, on fairy hills, fairy mounds, hollows inside a fairy tree, flower petals, or even flower pots. That’s right! Just like humans, fairies are capable of building their own houses. Fairy homes are unlike ours, though. They are constructed from flowers and leaves using magic.

And of course, fairy women would not be fairies if they didn’t decorate their homes. The inner side of fairy doors is usually colored in many beautiful designs created by using magical powers.

The color of these amazing creatures always depends on the fairies themselves. Some fairies are born with a very bright green color and others have soft, delicate pink hues. That’s one physical theory which references art-talent fairy, flower faeries, animal fairies, animal talent fairy, tailor fairy, winter ainimal-talent fairies, harvest-talent fairy, and house fairies.

A fairytale castle is another type of fairy home that fairies live in. It might be large or small, depending on the fairies who live there. The castle itself might even move from place to place if it is willed to do so and is not only reserved for the Fairy Queen.

Some people believe that fae folk live in a different dimension from us, and that it’s very close to our own (close enough so that they can cross over). Others say that the dimension isn’t entirely separated; it overlaps with ours, and the places where two worlds overlap allow fairies and humans to enter each other’s realms. In any case, the fairy realm is called Fairyland, and it’s entirely possible for a human to get stuck in that dimension if they aren’t careful.

When in contact with a fairy, you’ll do well to remember two rules: one, don’t eat anything they give you. Eating something while in Fairyland guarantees you’ll never leave. Two, don’t make any deals or promises. A deal with fae is one of the most common ways for a human to get stuck in the fairy realm (usually as a slave, though).

What kind of houses do fairies live in?

As you know, there are many types of fairies, and so they live basically all over the world – woods, gardens, lakes, sea, hills. Some fairies have houses, like we, humans, do, but there are others who don’t build anything and just use the resources of nature.

Out of all fae species – merfolk, elves, selkie, brownies, pixies, leprechauns, gnomes, dryads, nymphs, and more – only three are friendly with humans and don’t mind living in the same space and occasionally work together: dryads, brownies, and pixies. Knowing about them and their habitats will be most useful to you.

Dryads are tree fairies. They are very peaceful and care a lot about nature. They live inside the tree, which they are connected to, and if the tree dies, the nature spirit dies with it. How do you know if a tree in your garden or yard has a dryad attached to it? The tree will have a face. As long as you take good care of the tree (and other plants and animals for that matter), you’ll have a good relationship with this fairy.

Brownies are farmers’ helpers. They are fae that shares a home of a family or person they select and help them take care of their home and land. As this type of fairy lives right inside your home, the best way to befriend it is to acknowledge its presence by dedicating some space to it. You can fill that space with items of comfort, like pillows, a blanket, a cup, and a plate (these are needed for feeding your brownie).

And the last type of fae that might be willing to work with you is pixies. They are miniature creatures (usually with wings) that love and protect nature. They are the ones you think of when you hear the word ‘fairy’. Pixies usually live in gardens and woods, and because they are so attracted to beautiful nature spots, they can easily relocate and live in your fairy garden if it’s worthy. Think of Tinkerbell for this type of fairy.

How do you start a fairy garden?

If you want to have a pixie fae live in your backyard, you can attract it by building a fairy garden. A fairy garden is a miniature version filled with small plants, flowers, and decorations. Making one is easy and just requires a bit of imagination.

Step-by-step instructions on creating a fairy garden:

Step 1. Planning Choose a theme for your fairy garden and think of accessories and plants that are suitable for your project. Make a rough sketch of what will go where. Also, don’t forget to consider whether your garden will be inside or outside and choose plants accordingly.

Step 2. A container You’ll need to find a proper container that’ll serve as the garden area. Flower pots, glass bowls, terrariums, tin buckets, wooden boxes, etc. – all work pretty well, but don’t forget about drainage holes.

Step 3. Foundation and buildings Fill the container with potting soil. If you want to include a fairy house in your garden, put it right after the foundation is placed. You can use pebbles, moss, or bark to make pathways from the house to the edge of the container or other buildings (a gazebo, perhaps?).

Step 4. Plants There are many suitable options for your fairy garden, including baby tears, ferns, primroses, ivy, small bonsai trees, rosemary, calendula, ornamental strawberry, and more. Some of these you can use to cover the ground, and some of the plants can act as tiny trees – for example, rosemary. Tuck the plants you chose into the soil.

Step 5. Accessories Now, here is the part where you can turn your creation into one of the most comfortable and pretty spaces for fairies. Depending on your theme and budget, you can add tiny chairs, a table, birdbaths, lanterns, animal figurines, a swing, and more. Include anything you feel will make a difference for a fairy’s comfort, and you’ll have one occupying your garden very soon.

What to put in a fairy house?

Fairy houses, also known as woodland dwellings, are the places where fae live. These houses can be natural shelters, like flowers or caves, or they can be handmade. You can build a house using things like twigs, bark, and stone. Or you can buy one; many artists make gorgeous tiny houses for fae and sell them on platforms such as Etsy.

Definitely put a bed, a table, and a chair inside a fairy house – after all, they need to rest, too – but anything other than that is up to your imagination and skills.
