You are viewing: Where Does Beyond Paradise Take Place
Fancy a trip to Cornwall? I know I do.
Beyond Paradise not only provides us with mysterious storylines and entertaining characters but also a charming view of southeast England.
Written by Robert Thorogood, the show is a spin-off of BBC’s long-running crime drama, Death in Paradise.
It follows DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) after he left his job in Guadeloupe to be with the love of his life, Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton).
In series one, we saw the couple settling into their new life in Lloyd’s fictional hometown of Shipton Abbott.

Although the show is said to be set in Devon, most of the scenes were filmed in its bordering county, Cornwall.
The majority of the filming took place in Looe, a popular harbour town in southeast Cornwall.
The coastal town sits on a hill and is home to golden sandy beaches and quaint cobbled streets.
In episode three, Port Eliot House in Saltash was transformed into Shipton Manor and used as a filming location. Goodman visited the country estate and its 100-acre gardens when investigating the disappearance of a rare painting.
Filming also occurred in Launceston, a market town in Cornwall, and within Pentillie Castle and Estate.
Speaking to the i, executive producer Tim Key explained: “Being a Death in Paradise show we knew it had to be set somewhere beautiful, and in the UK, we are spoilt for choice.
“There were lots of conversations about where we take it but we settled quite quickly on the West Country as we felt that Devon hadn’t had a huge amount of exposure in TV drama, Cornwall often nabs all the glory.”
Recalling a visit to Looe, he remarked: “It was a beautiful tourist town, but also a thriving community with fishing businesses, so we felt we had found our home.”

Key added: “The fictional town is set slightly back from the coast, so we have all sorts of story worlds to dive into, including the folklore of the town, which is touched upon in episode one.”
Derry Girls star Dylan Llewellyn, who plays PC Kelby Hartford in the show, described the filming process as “amazing”.
He said: “Shooting towards the end of summer meant we were able to enjoy some great weather too.”
After a successful first season, Beyond Paradise was renewed in April 2023.
Fans can expect a Christmas special in December, with a second series to follow next year.
Announcing the news, executive producer Key shared: “We can’t wait to get our amazing cast back together to continue the story – and to be able to pay a visit to Shipton Abbott at Christmas is even better.”
