Where Does Bobby Knight Live

Legendary Indiana University basketball coach Bob Knight – who left the university in controversy and for years didn’t return publicly – has bought a home just three miles from Assembly Hall, where he coached for 29 years.

Robert M. Knight and his wife, Karen, signed property records last week for a 4,840-square-foot home in Bloomington in the Shadow Creek subdivision across from College Mall on Moore’s Pike, according to Monroe County Assessor’s records.

Built by Brewer Fine Homes in 2018, the 5-bedroom, 3.5-bath house at 1519 S. Andrew Circle was purchased by the Knights for $572,500 on July 3.

This home located at 1519 S. Andrew Circle in Bloomington was purchased by former IU basketball coach Bob Knight on July 3, 2019.

The real estate listing on Trulia.com says the home features an “open living room with vaulted ceilings and wood beams as well as wood ceiling, beams and wood paneling in the master bedroom.”

There is a finished basement with a “full bathroom, huge great room and home theater room. Custom white /off-white cabinets, quartz tops and LG brand stainless steel appliances,” the listing says.

It’s unclear whether the Knights will be living in the home full time. Bob Hammel, Knight’s longtime friend and confidante and former sports editor for the Bloomington Herald-Times, told IndyStar Thursday morning the purchase was “news to me.”

“I have no idea about moving plans,” Hammel said in an e-mail.

As of Thursday, Knight was still listed as the owner of a 4,700-square foot home in Lubbock, Tex. The 5-bedroom, 4-bath house at 8003 County Road 6910 has a 2019 assessed value of $536,000.

The health of Knight, 78, was called into question earlier this year after IU broadcaster Don Fischer said the coach was “not well” during a February appearance on “The Drive with Jack & Tom,” a radio show based out of Lansing, Mich.

Fischer later told IndyStar he had no first-hand knowledge of Knight’s health status, but then sent a statement reiterating the coach’s health “has declined.”

In April, during an appearance at Center Grove High, Knight struggled with memory but was emotional, too. He said five different times: “The best days of my life were when I coached at IU.”

Days later, Knight came to campus for a baseball game with Hammel. Knight’s public appearance garnered attention because he had refused numerous invitations to return to the IU campus since he was fired as coach in 2000 – including passing on the opportunity to be honored along with the undefeated 1976 championship team he led.

Hammel said at the time the visit was nothing more than a day out for Knight to watch a sport he loves and a chance to get a look at the new baseball stadium.

While it was Knight’s first known public appearance at the IU campus since his farewell speech after he was fired, Knight’s former assistant Dan Dakich and former player Todd Leary told IndyStar Knight has been back to the campus many times in the past 19 years.

Knight likes to go to his favorite restaurants in town and has taken tours of new buildings on campus, including the Cook Hall basketball practice facility at IU, Dakich said. Knight visits the university, just not publicly, he said.

Hired at IU in 1971, Knight spent 29 years as the Hoosiers beloved, fiery coach. During his nearly three decades with the team, the Hoosiers won 662 games and lost 239, a .735 winning percentage.

Knight led the Hoosiers to 24 NCAA tournament appearances, winning titles in 1976, 1981, and 1987, while losing in the semi-finals in 1973 and 1992.
