Who is Chief Keef?
Chief Keef, a rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer from Chicago, Illinois, gained popularity in the early 2010s among high school students on the city’s South Side. His single “I Don’t Like” became even more successful after American rapper Kanye West remixed it in 2012, reaching the Billboard Rap Top 20 and increasing Keef’s profile. This led to a bidding war between major record labels, and Keef eventually signed with Interscope. He released his debut album Finally Rich in December 2012, featuring the popular singles “I Don’t Like” and “Love Sosa,” which helped popularize the drill subgenre of Chicago rap.
Born on August 15, 1995, as Keith Farrelle Cozart, Keef’s mother Lolita Carter was only 15 and unmarried at the time of his birth. He was named after his deceased uncle, Keith Carter, who was known as “Big Keef.” Keef grew up in the Parkway Garden Homes in the Washington Park neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, a known stronghold of the Black Disciples street gang, of which Keef is a member.
