Joe Thomas has always been a man with a plan. He has always been grounded. We knew that when he chose to go fishing with his father back home in Wisconsin rather than sit in the green room waiting for his name to be called at the 2007 NFL draft.
Thomas knew the Browns were taking him with the third pick, so there was no need to pretend surprise or feign being overcome with emotion when the pick was made.

Joe joked that maybe he would be fishing when the 2023 Hall of Fame class was announced. Of course, he didn’t do that. He was on stage and smiling when his name was called during the NFL Honors event Feb. 9 in Phoenix.
Thomas was confident he would be elected the first time he was on the ballot, yet afterward he talked about how special the moment was for him. He wants to share his joy with Browns fans.

“I think as a Cleveland Brown and being the first Brown to be inducted since the team came back, it’s really special for me because that franchise has endured some really tough times,” Thomas said in his post-announcement news conference. “But those fans are so loyal and passionate, and they still show up.”
Hall of Fame candidates learn they have have been elected to the Hall by a knock on the door, sometimes at a hotel, sometimes at their home. Thomas heard the knock on the front door of his home in Middletown, Wisc. last week and when he opened it, standing on the other side bearing good news was Walter Jones, the left tackle Thomas emulated and the most recent player at his position to be a first-ballot Hall of Fame choice.
Thomas played his entire career — 10 years and seven games into his 11th season — in Cleveland. He blocked for 17 starting quarterbacks and played for six head coaches. The only team he played on that finished with a winning record was his rookie team that finished 10-6 in 2007 but missed the playoffs.
The Browns were 48-128 in games Thomas played. Those ugly numbers are not on his shoulders. These numbers tell the story: He blocked for 6,680 passing attempts and allowed only 30 sacks. That breaks down to one sack allowed for every 223 pass attempts.

“You just keep working on things one day at a time, and a lot of times, it’s those people around you that are the ones who are motivating you,” Thomas said. “It’s easy, if you’re just doing it for yourself, to get into the doldrums, especially if you’re losing like we seem to do a little bit in Cleveland.
“But you’ve got guys around you that you know are counting on you. They’re the brothers that pull you through those dark, tough times, and in the end, you look back and you’re like, ‘Wow, there were a lot of things that happened over my 11 years in the NFL — not always good, but the journey tells the story of my career, and I wouldn’t change anything.”
Thomas’ after-football plan has worked splendidly, too. He spends most of his time at his home in Wisconsin with his wife and their four children where he does some farming.
Thomas is still involved in the NFL with NFL Network and other ventures, but his life isn’t consumed by football anymore. Many retired players have trouble putting their playing days behind them. Thomas, the man with a plan, hasn’t had that trouble.
• I’m taking the Eagles to beat the Chiefs, 31-24, in the Super Bowl. Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts is the easy pick for Super Bowl MVP, but my pick is outside linebacker Haason Reddick. Reddick led the Eagles with 16 sacks in the regular season. He had 3.5 sacks in the Eagles’ two playoff games leading to the Super Bowl.
