Former Arkansas governor and well-known conservative political commentator Mike Huckabee and his wife, Janet, have sold their Blue Mountain Beach home. The couple recently purchased a home in Arkansas, where they are returning in part to help their daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, in her bid for governor.

BLUE MOUNTAIN BEACH — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and his wife Janet have sold their South Walton County beachfront home for $9.4 million, the real estate agent who represented the buyers has confirmed.

Joe Burton, who specializes in selling properties along and near County Road 30A, would say only that the buyers are out-of-state residents. They will use the home as a second residence and will not offer it as a vacation rental property, Burton said.

According to Walton County tax records, the three-story stucco home, with a concrete tile roof, comprises a total of 10,900 square feet, with 8,277 square feet of heated space. The house, built in 2011, has six bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms.

Tax records list a $7.2 million fair market value for the home, with the quarter-acre of land on which it sits valued at $2.1 million and the structure valued at a little more than $5 million.

The Huckabees were represented in the sale by the Spears Group of Scenic Sotheby’s International Realty in Destin. Jonathan Spears, founder of the group, did not immediately return a phone call or a text message seeking comment on the sale.

Mike Huckabee sells Blue Mountain Beach home for $9.4 million

According to Pulaski County, Arkansas, deed records, the Huckabees last month purchased a $1.725 million property there. Reports in the Arkansas Times and from Little Rock TV station Fox 16 describe the property as a 5-acre tract on a lake in the Somersett Estates community west of the city, comprising a 8,600-square-foot home and a 2,200-square-foot secondary residence.

Huckabee, now a conservative political commentator, confirmed rumors in December that he and his wife would be leaving Walton County to return to Arkansas. The move was contemplated in part to assist their daughter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, in a run for governor.

Huckabee Sanders, who served in the White House for a time as press secretary for now-former President Donald Trump, announced her candidacy late last month.

In a December email to the Daily News, Mike Huckabee wrote, “We absolutely love our home and love the area and our neighbors and friends and especially our church. But all seven grandchildren are now in Little Rock, as are all three of our adult children. Should Sarah make a run for office, we need to be there to help, mostly babysit kids.”

As far as the sale of the Huckabees’ South Walton home, Burton said, “It’s definitely my best sale.”

“I’ve done a few over a million (dollars),” Burton added, “but nothing like this.”

According to Burton, the sale is part of an emerging trend of dramatically rising prices for properties along and near County Road 30A. In 2019, Burton said, 12 homes in the area sold for more than $4 million, and last year 41 homes in the area sold for more than $5 million.

“We’ve always had people with that kind of money” interested in South Walton real estate, Burton said, but once prices pushed past the $5 million mark, residential real estate prices have continued to rise.

“It just took a couple of them to sell for over $5 million,” Burton said. “It’s really accelerated in the high end for sure.”

During his years of owning the beachfront property, Huckabee was one of the prime movers against “customary use,” a doctrine that holds that the sandy areas of Florida’s beaches are open for public use, even when held as private property.

Walton County is currently involved in legal proceedings involving a number of beachfront property owners over those owners’ assertion that the beachfront belongs to them.

According to Burton, the new owners of Huckabee’s former home aren’t particularly concerned with beach access issues.

“They’re not private beach kind of people,” he said.
