“KCCI values attract talented people from across the industry,” said KCCI President and General Manager Brian Sather. “This announcement represents us at our best; utilizing the skills we already have on our team, and recruiting the best people who will support our mission. We are proud to be a station where people of this caliber can grow their careers.”
Kaplan brings 20 years of broadcasting experience to KCCI. For the past seven years, he has been an evening anchor and reporter at WCTV, the CBS affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida. Kaplan’s reporting on the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria led to a 2019 Service to America award from the National Association of Broadcasting Leadership Foundation. He began his career as a sportscaster. Following graduation from the University of Montana, he worked at stations in Montana, Washington, and Sarasota, Florida.
“It took a special opportunity to make me want to break out the winter clothes again, and this is just that! I’m excited to be part of the team at KCCI and can’t wait to get started,” said Kaplan.
Terrell’s promotion to weeknights follows 13 years at KCCI, including anchoring weekends for 10 years. Terrell has won a national Edward R. Murrow award for her reporting. She anchored three newscasts that won Regional Emmy Awards for Best Weekend Newscast.

“I am proud to be a part of this extraordinary team that strives to serve Iowans every single day. I look forward to continuing my love of storytelling in my new role co-anchoring KCCI 8 News at 5,” said Terrell.

Another anchor with a decade of broadcasting experience in the Des Moines market will also join the KCCI team. An announcement about that is expected in the coming weeks.
“This expansion on weekday evenings is the latest example of our continuing commitment to serving central Iowa with journalistic excellence,” said Allison Smith, KCCI 8 News Director. “Stacey Horst knows and loves Iowa. Ben Kaplan brings us energy and a passion for helping people. Laura Terrell has deep bonds in the community and tells stories with sensitivity and compassion. And we’re excited to add another familiar face who has a history of connecting with viewers.”Viewers will see these changes starting on October 3.
