When Crystal and her unborn son, Jeremiah Johnson Taylor, were brutally killed nearly five months later, Derek was one of the prime suspects. Despite maintaining his innocence throughout the interrogation and willingly answering every question without legal representation, he claimed that Crystal had been unfaithful during their time together. His attempt to imply that the baby might not have been his was futile in the face of other crucial evidence.
Although the search of Derek’s home and vehicle yielded no significant findings, it was undeniable that he bore a resemblance to the suspicious male seen fleeing the scene. His first trial in 2016 resulted in a hung jury. It was not until October 21, 2017, after weeks of detailed testimonies, that Derek was finally found guilty on multiple charges. He was indicted on one count of first-degree murder with the special circumstances of murder for financial gain and multiple murders, one count of second-degree murder, and two counts of solicitation of murder.
