Where Is Eric Mays Now

SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) – The body of late Flint City Councilman Eric Mays is now in Saginaw, weeks after his death.

An attorney for his son told TV5 why the well-known councilman’s funeral services won’t be held in the city he represented.

“This was just his personal preference of where he wanted to go,” said Attorney Joseph Cannizzo.

He was explaining why his client, Eric Hakeem Mays, wanted his father’s remains at Paradise Funeral Chapel in Saginaw.

As we’ve reported, Councilman Eric Mays died last month.

Since then, a legal battle between Eric Hakeem Mays and his aunt and uncles over Mays’ body played out.

Cannizzo said the aunt and uncles decided to stop the fight for the body and let Eric Hakeem Mays have it, but Cannizzo said there might be a reason behind their willingness to let go.

“There was potentially a service this past Saturday that was done at Moon Funeral Home behind closed doors. And so, the rumors that we’re hearing with respect to that – and the fact that Mr. Mays was fully clothed – raise some questions for sure as to whether or not that actually happened,” Cannizzo said.

He said that would be a violation of a previous court order prohibiting any services last weekend.

And that’s not all. Cannizzo claims that the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home in Flint arranged a transfer of Mays’ body to Saginaw overnight Monday, taking away a law enforcement escort that was arranged for Mays.

“I’m very frustrated and upset about it. But the good thing is that I have his remains, so stay tuned,” said Eric Hakeem Mays.

TV5′s request for comment from the Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home has not been answered yet. In the meantime, funeral arrangements are still being ironed out.

Eric Hakeem Mays said his father’s final resting place will be in the Vehicle City.

“My dad for sure will be buried in Flint. My dad was Flint, and my dad will always be Flint. My dad’s legacy is Flint. So yeah, absolutely,” Eric Hakeem Mays said.

Funeral arrangements for Eric Mays are expected to be released on Wednesday.

As of Tuesday, TV5 was told his funeral will be on Friday, March 22 or Saturday, March 23, but that could change.
