- At the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, Puerto Rican-Dominican singer-songwriter Ozuna will perform, joining other artists like Bad Bunny and J Balvin.
- But who is Ozuna? If you aren’t familiar with the rising star, here’s everything you need to know about the singer behind hits like “Taki Taki,” “Te Soñé de Nuevo,” “El Farsante,” and more.
Earlier this year, Puerto Rican artist Ozuna was named one of Time 100’s Most Influential people in the world. But fans of the singer know his influence goes back long before he was in the pages of Time. Since the singer first hit the music scene in 2016, he’s been cranking out hits and more hits, the kind that manage to somehow both keep the party going and also inspire you to grab your beloved on the dance floor. (They’ve earned him comparisons to Drake, who has a similar style of both rapping and singing.) From singles like “El Farsante,” “Tu Foto,” and “Dile Que Tu Me Quieres” to “Taki Taki,” “Baila, Baila, Baila,” and his most recent collaboration with Rosalía, “Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi,” Ozuna has been dominating the Latin music charts—and isn’t stopping any time soon.
And at Monday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Ozuna will be introduced to an even wider, more mainstream audience. The singer-songwriter is scheduled to perform at the awards show and is nominated for “Best Dance Video” for his feature on DJ Snake’s “Taki Taki,” where he sings alongside Selena Gomez and Cardi B.

Ozuna’s appearance at the VMAs—and all over the music charts—is signaling Latin music’s current dominance in pop-culture and music. But it’s also just further confirmation that his star is on the rise, thanks to the unique way he manages to blend genres from reggaeton and bachata to R&B and Latin trap. Whether you can rattle off the lyric to every one of his songs or you’re just discovering the charming singer and family man, here’s everything you need to know about Ozuna.
Ok, first things first: How did Ozuna become famous—how old is he, and where is he from?
27-year-old Jan Carlos Ozuna Rosado was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1992. According to The New York Times, while his mother is Puerto Rican, Ozuna’s dancer father was Dominican—but was tragically shot and killed when Ozuna was only three years old. He was mostly raised by his paternal grandfather and grew up struggling—but when he was a teenager, he began to dabble in music, eventually moving to New York to explore a music career. He moved back to Puerto Rico to focus on music full time—using his father’s last name as his stage name—and by 2015, he was becoming a local star, performing hundreds of shows across the island.

At one point in 2017, Ozuna was on the the Billboard Latin charts eight times, according to the Times, for songs that were either his alone or that he was featured on. He’s also a gifted songwriter, telling the Times that he can write songs “in five minutes.”
But in addition to his catchy lyrics, it’s Ozuna’s lullaby-smooth voice and danceable mixes of reggaeton, bachata, R&B, and Latin trap that make his music enjoyable by all. In 2017, he released his debut album, Odisea, and to date his most well-known songs include “El Farsante” featuring Romeo Santos, “Escapate Conmigo” featuring Wisin y Yandel, and “La Modelo” featuring Cardi B. Most recently, fans have “dance, dance, danced” to his single “Baila, Baila, Baila”; he’s featured on “Taki Taki”—nominated for a VMA—and is one of the many artists featured on the chart-rising track “China” by Anuel AA. And that track with Rosalía, “Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi,” is quickly rising up the Latin Billboard chart.
To mark his entry onto this year’s Time 100 list, reggaeton veteran Daddy Yankee penned a sweet tribute to the singer’s musical talents.
“I’m proud of what he has become,” Daddy Yankee wrote. “Imagine a shoeshine boy all grown up. That is Ozuna. He shows kids that anything is possible—that you can become a global star if you work hard enough.”
So, um, asking for a friend: Is Ozuna married?

Sorry, y’all, but yes, Ozuna is indeed taken. While there’s not much about her out there on the internet, we can confirm that he’s been married for many years to a woman named Taina Marie Meléndez—and happily so. A video on the website CiberCuba shows a sweet throwback Facebook message that Ozuna wrote to his beloved back in 2017. “When I met you, I only had 40 dollars in my pocket, I had no car—I only had a heart to give you,” the posts translates. “Thank you for being the person who dries my tears and removes my sadness!”
Does that mean he has kids and a family?
Yup! Ozuna and Taina love showing off their fam. His son, 3-year-old Juan Andres Ozuna Melendez, is the youngest—the little brother to the adorable Sofia Ozuna Melendez, who is now 6. And despite the many female fans constantly sharing their adoration for the singer, Ozuna often shares sweet snaps of his brood.
Ok, he’s a singer and rapper, got it—but hold up, was Ozuna in a movie?
Yes! The rapper actually made his acting debut earlier this year in an independent film called Que León. In it, Ozuna played José Miguel, who falls in love with Nicole Miguel (played by model Clarissa Molina). The comedy explores how the two share the same last name—but come from two very different walks of life. And while Ozuna’s entry into acting was quiet, we have a feeling that won’t be the last time we see him on the big or small screen.
Should I follow Ozuna on Instagram?
If you’re a fan looking for updates on his latest music, plus concerts and shows—in addition to the occasional aforementioned wife and family snaps— Instagram is the best way to keep up with the latest from Ozuna. And oh yeah, he often drops a few special clips of himself singing. A little preview of what you can expect:
