250 AREA CODE NUMBER: LOCATION, CITIES, MAP AND TIME ZONE
The area code 250 is assigned to most of the unique area that is the Canadian province of British Columbia, with for the most part, the exception of Vancouver. It was first established in 1996, when the previous province wide 604 area code was being exhausted at a rapid rate.

How Do Area Codes Become Exhausted?
As technology has expanded along with the population of the towns and cities that were associated with the 604 area code, the number of phone numbers needed has increased significantly. What some do not always understand is that it is more than standard phones that make use of phone numbers. Fax machines need them, as do ATM machines and POS retail payment gateways. This all adds up to lots of phones, and when there are no more prefixes (the three-digit number that comes after the area code) left to be assigned an area code is considered to be exhausted and new ones must be overlaid to help carry the load.
The 250 Area Code Locations

Kamloops – Kamloops is a city in south central British Columbia that sits at the mouth of one of the province’s larger rivers, the Thompson River. The Thompson made it easier for settlers in the 18th century to explore the wilds of this area of Canada, and the city grew around the traders who used it as their base of operations. The city’s unusual name is an English version of the Shuswap word “Tk’əmlúps”, which means “meeting of the waters”.
The fur trade and the gold rush made Kamloops an important place in the 19th and early 20th centuries and although other, larger cities have now eclipsed it in size and population the history it holds, as well as the heavy industry that remains profitable in the area means that it is still an important part of the 250 area code.
These days Kamaloops is also a centre of culture, boasting a number of nationally known art galleries and museums, many of which focus on the legacy of the First Nations people. The city also has strong ties with Asia, as many of its first settlers were traders from China and India who made it their new North American home.
Dawson Creek – The plains town of Dawson Creek may not be very large but it is a magnet for tourists as it is considered Mile “0” of the famed Alaska Highway. Thousands of people make the trip down the iconic roadway every year, beginning their journey in Dawson Creek and the 250 area code and ending it in Fairbanks, Alaska. To accommodate and entertain their visitors the town has created art galleries, restaurants, museums and more and plays host to a large number of festivals every year, making the 250 area code one that can be associated in this area with history and fun!
Prince Rupert – Located on the breathtakingly beautiful Kaien Island, the city of Prince Rupert is the water, land and air transportation hub of British Columbia’s North Coast.
The fishing industry thrives in Prince Rupert, providing employment for many locals, including students who see it as the traditional way to pay their expenses while studying. Thanks to a new ‘sport’, whale watching, this small port city is becoming a centre for tourists and even a popular cruise ship stop, bringing new recognition to this section of the 250 area code.
Why is an Area Code Important?

Since they were first introduced in North America in 1949, area codes, along with zip codes, have been an easy way to quickly identify where a person lives, or where a business is located. However, with the rise of mobile communications and global business it would be easy to assume that area codes do not really matter anymore.
That is not the case, especially for a business. The concept of business branding is one that is becoming of significant importance to any business, no matter how large or small. The area codes associated with a company’s phone numbers are a part of that brand, and as many consumers do have a preference to deal with local concerns it can be a very important one.
Operate Globally. Appeal Locally
Did you know that it is now possible to offer your customers and clients a phone number with a local 250 area code to use for contact without your business maintaining a physical presence in the area? This is just one of the many advantages of making the switch from a traditional telephone system to an Internet powered, cloud based system. Such systems allow you to choose phone numbers from all across North America, including area code 250, so that you can operate a global business and yet still maintain the local presence and identity that people look for and trust.
Why Make the Move to the Cloud?
The demands on a average business phone system are increasing all the time. A traditional phone system can be expanded to meet these expanding needs, but it is often expensive, time consuming and troublesome to do so. In addition, many of recent technology businesses make use of it when communicating with their clients and customers – as well as other companies – are hard to integrate with a standard PBX phone system.
An Internet based, cloud telephone system is the 21st century alternative to standard phone company offerings and making the switch to one can benefit almost any business in many different ways:
- Easier Expansion – As a business grows so does it communication needs. In the past even adding a single phone line to an office involved lots of extra wiring, the purchase of special equipment and several hours (or days, or even weeks) spent waiting for a tech to arrive to implement and install it. With a cloud based system however adding a new line takes minutes and calls for no technical expertise, just a few clicks and the purchase of the USB hand or headset of your choice.
- Simple Integrations – Businesses communicate in many ways these days, via fax, email, text message, instant message, teleconferencing and more. To get the most out of all of these different forms of communications they need to be integrated and monitored, something that can be almost impossible to do when a traditional telephone system is involved. A cloud system makes it not only possible but very simple, leading to increased productivity, better cost control and superior customer service.
- Greater Savings – One of the most important reasons to make the switch to Cloud communication for many businesses is the savings it offers. No longer being tied to long distance phone call charges, or per minute call charges. Cloud communication offers significant savings and the system can be expanded quickly and easily. There are no labour fees, no call out charges and if the system runs into technical trouble it can be repaired quickly and easily by remote connection, avoiding hours of expensive downtime.
If the idea of making use of a more efficient, more cost-effective cloud based telephone and communications system appeals to you, and you would like a telephone number or numbers with a 250 area code, the time to act is now. As the demand for 250 numbers continues to grow it’s fair to say they will not be available forever.
