Where is the Big Bend of Florida?

Florida’s Big Bend is an informally named region of North Florida. Many describe it as the area where Florida’s Panhandle (the east-west section of the state) transitions to the Florida Peninsula (the north-south section of the state).

Some define the area running from Wakulla County south to Pasco.

Others include Tallahassee and Tampa in the Big Bend region.

Compared to the rest of Florida, Big Bend has low population

VisitFlorida describes the Big Bend region as a place to visit “if rural roads clear your mind and calm your soul.

“Following Florida’s peninsula south from Tallahassee along the Gulf of Mexico, there are places where manatees outnumber people and rivers outrank roads as the preferred mode of transportation.”

What roads are in the Big Bend area?

Florida

Don’t expect many roads along the Gulf of Mexico. U.S. 98, which parallels much of the Big Bend, is actually anywhere from 3 to 20 miles from the coastline.

The Big Bend Scenic Byway is a marked route through Franklin, Leon, and Wakulla counties.

Major highways even farther from the coast include: Interstate 10, Interstate 75, U.S. Route 19 (and its spur route U.S. Route 319), U.S. Route 27 and U.S. Route 90.

Several state and local routes serve the region, including Florida State Road 12, Florida State Road 20, Florida State Road 24, Florida State Road 51, Florida State Road 59, and Florida State Road 65.

What cities are in the Big Bend?

There are few cities in the Big Bend area.

State Road 51 will take you to Steinhatchee, population of 537 in 2020.

State Road 24 will take you to Cedar Key, and its population of 700 in 2021.

State Road 40 travels from Yankeetown (with its 2021 population of 603 in 2021) to the Gulf of Mexico and Bird Creek Beach.

What is the Big Bend known for?

The region is known for its woods and marshes, along with its low population.

It’s home to the Alapaha Rise, which is a re-emergence of a portion of the Alapaha River, and to Wakulla Spring, is one of the largest and most dramatic of Florida’s springs, according to Cave Atlas.
