Almost four years have passed since the release of the hit Disney + show by Jon Favreau- The Mandalorian. The show features Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) protecting a child of unknown species hunted down by the Imperials. Although we loved the stoic bounty hunter, a small green big-eyed creature captured our hearts and minds. We are talking about Grogu, known to the general public by its popular nickname, baby Yoda. As we patiently wait for the new episodes of season 3, why not look at the inspiring Mandalorian Filming Locations?
From sandy planets to lush green marbles from Outer Rim Territories, the Mandalorian introduced us to all the wonders of the Star Wars universe. Even though the crew shot the scenes mainly in the studios, many outstanding places on Earth resemble the planets we see in the series. Therefore, we made sure to discover all the landscapes that might have inspired the creation of said planets.

Mandalorian Filming Locations in Season 1
Kilauea volcano, Hawaii
First on our list of Mandalorian Filming Locations is the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The majestic volcanic landscape and hardened lava strongly remind us of the volcanic planet Navarro. This haven for the Bounty Hunter’s Guild boasts volcanic fields and lava rivers. One of the scenes in the show that perfectly depicts the volcanic Navarro nature is where IG-11 sacrifices to protect Mandalorian, Grogu, and others from the Imperial ambush.
Interestingly, Kilauea is an active shield volcano almost 280,000 years old! This majestic work of nature lies in the Volcanoes National Park along the southeastern shore of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Each year, over half a million visitors visit this majestic volcano. There are multiple hiking trails to choose from however, Kilauea Iki Trailhead is people’s favorite.
Manhattan Beach Studios, California, USA
As we mentioned before, the producers of Mandalorian shot the scenes mostly in studios. The revolutionary technology, LED screens, allowed artists to create landscapes and project them on a 360° screen in front of which the actors could play. One of the studios was the MBS Media Campus in Manhattan Beach, California. Moreover, the studio was home to several great shows and films, such as Avatar: The Way of Water (2022), The Book of Boba Fett (2021-2022), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), and Jane the Virgin (2014-2019).
With 15 LA’s biggest and best-equipped sound stages and cutting-edge technology, the choice for the shooting was obvious. Some of our favorite scenes created in MBS include those of Ahsoka Tano and Din Djarin on the Corvus planet.
Manly Beacon, Death Valley National Park, California, USA
In the first episode, we discover the landscapes of the desert planet Arvala-7, which reminds us of Death Valley, a US national park in California. The scenes where Mando lands the Razor Crest and later meets Kuiil especially grabbed our attention. In the background, we see otherworldly stone formations similar to Manly Beacon in the National Park.

Namely, Manly Beacon is a steep slope rising above the Death Valley badlands. The dry terrain with highly eroded rocks of Death Valley was a perfect choice for creating the image of the said desert planet. The National Park was also a filming location for planet Tatooine in the trilogies. Luckily, there are many trails you can follow to explore the area, as it is very popular among hikers, climbers, and sports enthusiasts. We recommend Zabriskie Point, Golden Canyon and Gower Gulch trails.
Red Cathedral, Death Valley National Park, California, USA
Another filming location in Death Valley National Park is Red Cathedral, only a few minutes walk from Manly Beacon. Compared to Manly Beacon, this slope has a reddish complexion, which only intensifies during sunset. That is one of the reasons why it is so popular among hikers. In the first episode, we can see the same reddish slope during the closeup scenes of Mando fighting off blurrg.
The best way to reach the Cathedral is by taking the Golden Canyon trail, which is around 4 kilometers long. We recommend avoiding going in the middle of the day due to the heat. The best time to visit the trail is between October and March, as the temperatures drop. Sadly, dogs are not allowed on the Golden Canyon trail. So if you are traveling with your beloved pet, you might need to consider a different route. Also, keep away from Jawas, they steal things. I have spoken.
Mandalorian Filming Locations in Season 2
El Segundo, California, USA
Next on our list of Mandalorian filming locations is the town of El Segundo in the Los Angeles Area. In the second episode of season two, the Mandalorian takes us across the desert planet of Tatooine. More precisely, to the small town of Mos Pelgo, under the stern watch of the Sherrif Cobb Vanth.
The producers decided to shoot exterior scenes of Mos Pelgo at the studio in El Segundo. Some include the exterior cantine scene and the fight with Tusken Raiders. If you find yourself in a Californian town, we recommend visiting the Automobile driving museum, Old town Music Hall, and ESMoA. Also, do not miss the old Distillery with its famous 1920s-themed tasting room.
Pamukkale, Turkey
Who would have thought that the sunny UNESCO Turkish town of Pamukkale could depict the ice-cold planet of Maldo Kreis? In the second episode of season two, our favorite bounty hunter stops at Maldo Kreis to hide. Then, Frog Lady escapes to the small lake to bathe with her eggs. This scene grabbed our attention the most, as the small inner lake reminds us of the white travertine terraces in Pamukkale.
Pamukkale, meaning cotton castle, is a remarkable site in southwestern Turkey. This wonder of nature is a result of carbonate minerals from the thermal spring water. Moreover, it is one of the most popular sites in Turkey among tourists. If you wish to swim at Pamukkale, you can do so at the public travertine pools and Cleopatra’s Pool. We assure you, there are no krykna there.
The Tetsuo Harano Tunnels, Hawaii
In one of the most thrilling episodes of season two, Mandalorian travels to Morak, a tropical planet with deep green forests. The episode showed an intimidating imperial base, which many fans recognized as the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels in Hawaii. Tetsuo Harano is in actuality a highway tunnel on the island of O’ahu connecting Kaneohe and Ko’olau Range. It is surrounded by an impressive mountain range and lush deep green rainforests. To get the best view of the Ko’olau Mountains, we highly recommend taking the H-3 Highway.
Texas Canyon, Arizona, USA

The season two finale presented us with some of the most attention-grabbing scenes. One of them was the Jedi Temple, where Luke Skywalker teaches Grogu the ways of the Jedi. Another was the scene where Boba Fett, Mando, and Fennec Shand join forces to prevent Imperials from kidnapping the Child.
If you wondered where the animators might have drawn inspiration to create the rocky landscapes of Tython, buckle up, as we have discovered a stunning new location. We are talking about the Texas Canyon in Arizona, a valley in Cochise County. Texas Canyon lies between Little Dragoon and Dragoon mountains, which makes it a great hiking spot. Due to its impressive boulders, it is popular among climbers too!
Santa Susana Pass, California, USA
Another location that might have inspired animators for the Tython scenes is the Santa Susana Pass in the Simi Hills of southern California. The scenery comprises sandstone formations and numerous majestic boulders, native bunchgrass plants, oak savannas, and the California chaparral ecoregion.
Santa Susana Pass has a rich history in cinema, as it was a popular filming location for multiple Western movies. That includes Shooting High (1940), Man’s Genesis (1912), Judith of Bethulia (1914), Jack and the Beanstalk (1917) and Range Warfare (1935). No doubt it inspired the fight scenes of our favorite Disney Space Western finale.
Mandalorian Filming Locations in Season 3
Lake Powell, Colorado River, USA
I swear on my name and the names of the ancestors. That I shall walk the Way of the Mand’alor… Remember the scene of the Mandalorian “helmet ceremony”? Well, who would not with the majestic mountains and lake in the background? We could not help but notice that the infamous ceremony lake greatly resembles Lake Powell of the Colorado River in the USA. Although the producers shot the scenes in the MBS Studio, the inspiration for the lake was obvious.
Lake Powell is a popular summer recreation destination with approximately two million visitors annually. This artificial reservoir lies between Utah and Arizona on the Colorado River. Its creation was a result of the flooding of Glen Canyon from the Glen Canyon Dam, which consequently created the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, too.
Neist Point, Isle of Skye, Scotland
The new residence of Bo’Katan on the planet of Kalevala, or the Neist Point Lighthouse on the Isle of Skye? There is almost no difference between the two! In Chapter 17 of the third season of Mandalorian, we discover a green planet full of cliffs and untamed waters. Moreover, in Chapter 18, we see even more of the island’s glens and falls during the fight scene between Bo’ Katan and Mando against Imps. One of the cliffs was a place for a palace-like imposing structure, which replaced the Neist Point Lighthouse.
Namely, Neist Point is one of Scotland’s most famous and visited lighthouses. We can all agree that after the release of season three, the number of visitors will only increase. If you wish to hike to Neist Point, it will take you a good 45-minute walk. However, the incredible view makes for all the hassle. Also, there is a good chance you spot whales, basking sharks, dolphins, and perhaps a little green big-eared creature.
