The NFL is evaluating any potential need for rule changes this offseason and at least two could be planned this year with the “tush push” and the end zone fumble resulting in a touchback. Former Houston Texans star JJ Watt proposed one more rule change the league should consider – specifically on holding penalties. Because it’s not as crippling to the offense.” Watt explained that good passers are unlikely to get holding calls unless it’s really egregious and pointed out specific cases in which players won’t get the call if they run into a waiting. “It has to be outside the body, where a guy is literally pulling you and it’s like away from his body,” Watt said. “And it sucks, yes, because it’s very difficult to do, but I learned at the end of my career what they were going to be called and what they weren’t.” Arizona Cardinals defensive end JJ Watt smiles while chatting with San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle in Santa Clara, California on January 8, 2023. He also suggested it didn’t make sense for a defensive hold to be a 5-yard penalty. The NFL Annual Meeting will take place March 24-27 in Orlando, Florida.
