He may have left his Heart in San Francisco, but Astoria-born super crooner Tony Bennett’s soul has been laid to rest in Woodside, where the hills at Calvary Cemetery will forever be filled with the sound of his music.
Bennett, who was born in Long Island City and raised in Astoria, was laid to rest in a gravesite identified in published reports and on social media, beneath a simple granite stone marking the resting place of the “Benedetto” family, including his mother, Maria.

Bennett was famously employed in the 1950’s by the Riccardo brothers at their Astoria restaurant/catering hall, according to a member of the Riccardo family. “Tony Bennett was a young man waiting on tables at the restaurant on 21st Street in Astoria when a fellow worker suggested that he should ‘get out there and sing to the customers,’” Richard Riccardo said. “It took some prompting, but one evening he placed a towel over his arm and started to sing. He was an instant success, on his way to a phenomenal future.”
Bennett is most recently remembered for founding the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts High School, strategically located in the center of the Kaufman Arts District and fittingly across from the Kaufman Astoria Studios on 35th Avenue in Dutch Kills.
Steel workers installing beams during construction of the school in 2008 originally planned to include Bennett’s name in a “tag” on the interior of the structure, a worker told the Queens Gazette. “Mr. Bennett asked us to reconsider and tag the beam in memory of his friend and mentor, Frank Sinatra. The Queens Gazette ran a photo of the tag at the time, a simple “Old Blue Eyes” painted in a bright shade of (what else?) blue.

Bennett was known in the latter part of his career for his work with younger artists like Lady Gaga. The pair sparkled on stage, emulating Bennett’s hits with a whole new magic. “Happy Birthday, Tony,” Lady Gaga posted on Twitter on August 3rd. “August 3rd is Tony Bennett Day,” Gaga continued. “A day for smiling. But I’ll be celebrating you a lot more than once a year…Every time I walk down the streets of New York I’ll look around and remember all you did for this city and the world.”
