Legend was born in Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. According to People magazine, he started playing piano at 4 years old before learning how to play gospel music a few years later.
He attended the University of Pennsylvania after graduating high school.

Legend told the “Today” show in September he and his wife Chrissy Teigen welcomed two new children this year: baby Esti in January and baby Wren, born via surrogate, in June. The little ones join their siblings Luna, 7, and Miles, 5.

He accompanied Lauryn Hill’s 1998 song “Everything is Everything” on piano. He also worked with stars Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Jay-Z before going solo.

Eighteen artists have received the elusive EGOT. Legend joined the ranks in 2018, a list that includes Viola Davis, Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg and others.
Legend earned an Emmy for producing the 2018 NBC show, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” He was nominated for his lead role, but did not win the acting award. His co-producing on August Wilson’s “Jitney” earned him an Tony, and he won an Oscar for his and Common’s original song, “Glory,” which was in the 2014 film “Selma.” He also has 12 Grammys under his belt.
Legend was the first Black man to achieve EGOT status.
