Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges are a sparse collectable, one that’s not completely obvious at first glance. How do you collect it? What do you use it for? And how do I find more? These are all fair and immediate questions.
So, we’re here to help you answer them. Once you’re all wrapped up with TotK’s crystallized charges, check out our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom review for a full roundup. Anyway, let’s get into our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges guide.
What are Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges?
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges are a way to permanently upgrade Link’s energy cell – the battery on his waist that powers Zonai devices. Link has a set amount of charge at the beginning, but by trading crystallized charges with the construct marked at the location on the map below – right in front of the Nachoya shrine on the Great Sky Island – you can get energy wells, which increases this battery’s capacity. You can hold up to eight energy wells at once on Link’s holster.
Here is a breakdown of terms when talking about crystallized charges:
- Zonaite – a material found in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s depths that you can refine into Zonai charges or crystallized charges
- Zonai charge – a one-off, non-permanent boost to battery capacity
- Energy wells – permanent boosts to Link’s battery capacity
- Crystallized charge – the refined product of Zonaite that can be traded for energy wells
It’s all a bit confusing, right? Why do I have to refine Zonaite into crystallized charges and then trade these again to boost my battery? I don’t know either, but that’s a breakdown of how it all works. The main question really is, however, how do we find some more?
How do I find more Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges?
The easiest way to get more of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s crystallized charges is to purchase charges with Zonaite at a forge. There’s a construct on the Great Sky Island that can sell you ten at a time, but we don’t know how often these replenish – I made Link sleep for a whole week straight and still, this construct’s crystallized charge supply had not replenished.

So, head to the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom depths. Down here, different bosses can drop crystallized charges, while other enemies drop Zonaite – the currency needed to create crystallized charges. There are also refineries down here that can offer you more crystallized charges than the ones in the sky. Explore the Depths, and you should find a bunch.
Should I make Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom crystallized charges or Zonai charges with Zonaite?
This is a question of taste – do you want a permanent battery boost or lots of spare charges in case of emergency? The game really throws a lot of Zonai charges at you – they litter all the sky islands abundantly – so you should get a bunch of those just by playing.
You don’t, however, get any energy wells. The only way to get them, as far as we know, is by creating crystallized charges and trading them with Steward Constructs at the crystal refineries. So, we recommend that you use your Zonaite to create crystallized charges and get a permanently bigger battery.
