This quest starts out as soon as Shadowheart joins our party.

For the most part this will be an overview of the overarching questline that involves Shadowheart and it’s here mostly to connect the different quests that take place within the questline. This is also the questline that’s more interlinked with the main campaign (especially in Act 2) so you’ll be, for the most part, doing it whether you like it or not.

Like stated above, this will start as you get Shadowheart to join the party and from this point on you’ll simply want to play through the game. Eventually you’ll unlock the questline’s first quest.

The Chosen of Shar

Learn about Shadowheart’s past from Dame Aylin

Once that quest is complete you’ll have to continue playing through the game until you complete the main quest “Defeat Ketheric Thorm”. This is pretty much at the end of Act 2 but not yet into Act 3.

After that quest you’ll want to go back to camp and talk to the Nightsong where she’ll explain a lot about Shadowheart and a bit of her past. This will of course give us an update on our quest.

Find a Sharran Lookout

When you arrive in Rivington, talk to Shadowheart to learn about a Sharran lookout in the area. She isn’t certain of their location but she knows they are found before entering Wyrm’s Crossing. The Sharran lookout is Ferg Drogher who is southeast of Arfur’s Mansion.

Your destination will be the House of Grief in the Lower City. It’s in the northwest part, northwest of the Baldur’s Gate Waypoint. You should see some Griefguards patrolling the area; they indicate you are in the right spot.

Journey to the House of Grief (Dark Justiciar Version)

Go inside the House and speak to Mirie at the front. She will guide you into a room where you can sit on the bench. You must actually sit on the bench if the scene isn’t playing. Have Shadowheart take your place when prompted. Remain silent and the scene will play out, letting you meet Viconia DeVir. Go down the exposed stairway after the scene. This will also start the Investigate the House of Grief quest.

Follow the path (don’t go through any locked doors) and you should see Viconia in the middle of the room. Approach and a scene will play. Shadowheart will claim to have Lady Shar’s favor, and a Persuasion or Performance check will back it up. As an outsider, both checks have a disadvantage.

Connect with Shadowheart and talk about Shar’s power or the Absolute army. You can let Shadowheart keep talking or fight immediately. Depending on your performance and Shadowheart’s speeches, you can get more allies on your side.

Fighting Mother Superior

Viconia will transform into a wolf which frightens Shadowheart if she fails the saves. She can Bite and inflict damage while jumping around. When her wolf form is defeated, her human self emerges and is vulnerable. In her human form, she’s capable of using the same spells as Shadowheart such as Spirit Guardians.

If you see the Radiant Retort buff on Viconia, don’t deal any Radiant damage. Radiant Retort will reflect it as Force damage instead, which has few resistances. Stick with other damage sources to bring her down. Spellguard also makes spells less effective, and you want to attack with physical weapons during this time.

Watch out for the Justiciar Crusaders who use Overwhelming Grief. It doesn’t hurt you at first, but it makes you take Necrotic damage in a Lightly or Heavily Obscured area. Umbral Form Justiciars will also deal more damage if they hit anyone who is affected. If Darkness is cast on your party, it counts as Heavily Obscured which triggers Overwhelming Grief.

Your goal is to take out Viconia quickly. Any allied units you convert can hold off the enemies for a while, but Viconia is the big threat. If your allies can’t hold off the enemies, switch your focus away from Viconia to support them.

Spells that don’t miss are effective such as Fireball or Flame Strike. When Viconia’s support dwindles, she’s easier to take down. Constantly attack her to break her concentration and knock her out.

Fighting Mother Superior After Sparing Nightsong

If you freed Nightsong, you won’t have any allies and must fight everyone yourself. This is important to remember because everyone will be rushing towards you. Area-of-effect spells are vital if you want to defeat large groups of enemies. Fighting them individually will wear you out too often. Fortunately, few enemies have high HP and you shouldn’t have a problem taking them out.

The few survivors and Viconia will be easier to defeat once the weak enemies are down. Focus your attention on the survivors, then focus on Viconia to win. Viconia’s moveset is almost a copy of Shadowheart’s; there won’t be anything you haven’t seen before.

Spells will be your biggest nightmare, with several Bone Chills and Darkness spells flying around. It’s hard to counter because the numerical advantage means you will waste Counterspells trying to stop the effect. Your best bet is to either gather your units together or split them up to take out any spellcasters. When enough enemies have fallen, it’s easier to focus on Viconia and take her out.

Family Reunion (Shadowheart)

After defeating Shar’s forces, you can speak to Viconia and kill her if you wish. Your goal is to go behind Viconia’s initial position and go through the Threshold of Loss. Unfortunately it is locked and it’s not immediately apparent how to unlock it.

The first method is to look for a Silver Key among the bodies you just fought, which unlocks the door. The second is to put 1000 gold or several items onto the sacrificial altar in front of the Threshold of Loss. There’s an armory in the southeast on your map that has several items. The final option is to pass a Lockpick check of 30.

Either option gets you through the door which allows you to meet Shadowheart’s parents. You can choose to keep them alive or free them, or let Shadowheart decide what happens. After the decision is made, the quest ends. Spend a Long Rest and speak to Shadowheart afterwards to bring closure to the quest.

The Power of Shar (Dark Justiciar)

After the battle, head behind Viconia’s initial position before the scene to find the Chamber of Loss. Go through the door (the Threshold of Loss) and speak with the two people in the center. Encourage Shadowheart to kill them and the quest is complete. You will now have Shar’s forces to aid you when the final battle occurs.
