Wegovy (semaglutide) is an injectable prescription medication FDA-approved for promoting weight loss in people with overweight or obesity. When combined with diet and exercise, the medication has helped people lose between 15%-17% of their body weight in less than a year and a half.
Wegovy belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists. These medications work by mimicking GLP-1, a hormone produced naturally in your body that helps regulate your appetite and blood sugar levels. Wegovy leads to weight loss through a number of mechanisms, some of which researchers are still learning more about. These include:

Slowing down digestion by keeping food in your stomach longer, so you feel full sooner

Sending signals to your brain to tell you you’re full, leading you to stop eating

Reducing your cravings and appetite for certain foods
Wegovy may be prescribed to people with obesity (defined as having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) or those who are overweight, with a BMI of 27 or higher and a weight-related health condition such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or type 2 diabetes.
Wegovy is administered as a weekly injection under the skin in your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Each box of Wegovy contains a month’s supply of the medication, with four prescription pens that each contain a single dose of Wegovy. Typically, health providers recommend starting with a low 0.25 mg dosage of Wegovy. They will then likely titrate up your dosage over a period of weeks or months until you reach your maintenance dose, in order to minimize side effects and help your body get used to the medication. Wegovy is available in five dosage strengths, including 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg.

As a prescription medication, your first step to getting Wegovy is making an appointment with a healthcare provider. You can meet with your primary care provider or a specialist in obesity medicine. Or, you can meet with a licensed healthcare professional through an online weight loss program like Ro Body. Once you have a prescription for Wegovy, you can get Wegovy at your local pharmacy or online.
Most national pharmacy chains — including CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Costco, and Walmart — carry Wegovy, as do many smaller local pharmacies. If you choose to fulfill your prescription through an online pharmacy, take care to confirm that it is legitimate and trustworthy. If the answer to the following four questions is yes, then you should be good to go:

As we mentioned, there is currently a shortage of Wegovy, so your best bet to find Wegovy in stock is to call around to local pharmacies. Given the Wegovy shortage, it is not abnormal to have to call multiple pharmacies before you find one that has Wegovy in stock.
Many pharmacies also offer home delivery services, sometimes for free, which means you can expand your outreach to more than just the pharmacies close to your home. As long as they offer delivery, consider calling pharmacies outside of your typical commute.

It’s unknown when the Wegovy shortage will be fully resolved and Wegovy will be widely available again. Novo Nordisk, the drug maker behind Wegovy, is currently prioritizing production of the two maintenance dosages of Wegovy, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg. This way, people who are already taking Wegovy can continue to do so with little to no disruption.
The dosages of Wegovy that are more difficult to find are the lower dosage strengths, including 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, and 1 mg. These dosage strengths are prescribed when someone is just beginning treatment with Wegovy. While these dosage strengths are still being produced, it is to a much lesser extent, so if you’re new to Wegovy, you may have a tougher time finding Wegovy in stock.
Novo Nordisk is doing what it can to increase production, including contracting with additional manufacturing facilities. Still, the company has not said when they expect the supply disruption to be over.
