The Lazy Lizard is at the Split, which divides Caye Caulker into two separate islands. This wasn’t always the case: the Split was created by a hurricane back in 1961.

Nowadays it’s one of Caye Caulkers’ main attractions. A great place to swim, relax, drink cocktails and Belkin beers, and take in the island life as it is meant to be. The Lazy Lizard is the most popular bar in the area.

Try some frozen Lizard Juice if you dare. It’s supposed to be a great cocktail, but the name is not that appealing.

Iguana Reef Inn has created a great place for them to stay. With ropes and other things for them to hold on to. They’re not being fed and weren’t caught to put in the sanctuary, so it’s all good! They just really enjoy the area.

They’re quite hard to spot though, so it might take a few moments to find one. Once you know what you’re looking for, you’ll see plenty of them! Oh, and it’s free to visit, which is great!

If you’re a backpacker like me, the other way of doing so is by tourist shuttle. There is one from Flores in Guatemala, or from San Ignacio in Belize. Most companies combine the two, so it’s the same shuttle with a stop in San Ignacio. The cheapest way however is by chicken bus.

We booked our tickets at the port. They’ll most likely have space. But you can also book them online here. Keep in mind that if your flight to Belize City is delayed, you might miss your ferry.

We didn’t know how we were going to get to the city, so we opted for buying them on the spot for $58,50 Belizean dollars. Which is $29,25 USD. So buying in advance is definitely cheaper!

TIP: Buying a return ferry ticket is the most cost-efficient. You can take ANY ferry back, at any date or time, so this is definitely the best option.

It’s a great addition to your Belize itinerary.

Other than that, it’s right next to the second biggest barrier reef. Which makes it a very popular destination for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts!

However, 5 is not the limit! Caye Caulker is great for longer holidays too. But if you’re on a full Central America trip and just passing through like us, 5 days is plenty.

Food wasn’t expensive, especially compared to the US or Western Europe. We spent about $15 USD per meal in restaurants. But we did go for the slightly cheaper places.

We loved it there!
