Best Areas to Stay in Mauritius

In this blog post, I’ve divided the island into four main areas – North, South, East, and West. I didn’t include the central region as there aren’t many options for places to stay and it isn’t that tourist-friendly. I would recommend staying near the beach during your Mauritius itinerary and doing some day trips if you want to visit the attractions in this area.

The north and west coasts are the sunniest and boast many beautiful beaches, so great for a beach vacation. They are also well-developed with a huge selection of luxury to budget accommodations. Both are great for first-timers and families and have an efficient public transportation system.

The east coast is quieter and features mainly all-inclusive resorts, making it ideal for couples and honeymooners. The only downside is that it does get windy during the winter months (mainly between July and September) but the temperature still hovers between 20 and 28 degrees Celsius.

The south coast feels more secluded and features lots of unique natural attractions and is great for hikers and nature lovers. It’s also great for couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic vacation.

Note: If you’re spending at least 7-10 days in Mauritius, it would be best to split your stay between two different regions. Mauritius might seem small at first glance but if you’re staying in the north and planning to take a day trip to the south, you’ll be spending quite a lot of time and money on transportation.

Best Places to Stay in Mauritius North

If you’re wondering where to stay in Mauritius, the north coast is by far the most tourist-friendly since it features a huge range of accommodations, from luxury to budget hotels.

It’s also one of the hottest and sunniest regions of the island, even during winter. So if you’re looking for a beach vacation, the north is a great choice.

Below are some of the best things to do in North Mauritius:

  • Northern Islands hopping tour
  • Beach hopping to La Cuvette, Grand Baie, Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches and Pereybere
  • Day trip to Port Louis
  • Go on a street food tour
  • Visit Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
  • Kayaking tour of Ambre Island
  • Notre Dame D’Auxiliatrice Church

Grand Baie – Where to stay in Mauritius for the first time

Grand Baie is no doubt the best place to stay in Mauritius for first-time visitors. You can choose to stay in Grand Baie itself or La Cuvette, Pereybere, Bain Boeuf or Mont Choisy, all of which are located within a few minute’s drive of each other.

One of the main reasons why tourists stay in the Grand Baie area is that it provides easy access to some of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius.

You’ll find a great selection of restaurants in Grand Baie that serve both local and Western food. If you plan on cooking, you can buy groceries at the local market or supermarkets nearby. And if you’d like to party the night away, there are nightclubs and bars here as well.
