Access to free public showers is an incredibly important thing for people who are experiencing homelessness or lack permanent shelter. Without access to a shower or other hygiene services, we humans can experience low self-esteem, struggle to find and keep a job, disconnect from social interactions, or place ourselves at higher risk for infections.
Showering on a regular basis helps us meet social standards of cleanliness and outward appearance. It also keeps us healthy by removing bacteria, dead skin cells, and other irritants that might lead to skin issues.
Jennifer Coon, a Peer Support Specialist in Portland, works with people who are experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity at Blanchet House. She knows through her own experience with homelessness and addiction how important access to a shower can be.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover. Underneath the filthy pants, grimy hands, and greasy hair is someone with feelings and a story,” Coon says. “They simply need a break like a hot shower and some clean clothes. The struggle is very real.”
