The characters of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers venture to Tranquillum House for a renewing experience. Each is burdened by problems, and each hopes the experimental treatments offered by retreat owner Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman with a Russian accent) will somehow relieve them of their trauma, their baggage, and their flaws.

Just from the first glimpse of the building beyond the brass gates, Tranquillum House’s healing powers are totally plausible. In Liane Moriarty’s book upon which the show was based, Tranquillum House is a historic mansion. But it has a different vibe in the show, and that’s thanks to SOMA, a real-life spa retreat in Australia that serves as the show’s setting.

Tranquillum House is designed to inspire, well, tranquility. Surfaces gleam with the appeal of a cleaning commercial. Light pours through the two-story-high glass windows. And if we had to guess, it smells like the inside of an essential oil diffuser.

And this gorgeous, remote setting is the first step of Masha’s plan: It disarms the guests. Surrounded by paradise on earth, they have no choice but to lower their defenses and take a swim. And hey, while they’re at it—why not go along with Masha’s strange plan.

When writing Nine Perfect Strangers, author Liane Moriarty was interested in exploring wellness culture and the idea that people are only a few treatments away from their best selves. Moriarty actually visited a few spas as part of the research process (not so shabby, eh?).

So it’s only fitting that the show was filmed at one of those retreats. Soma is located on 22 acres of rainforest in Byron Bay in New South Wales, a state on the eastern coast of Australia. According to the website, “Soma is a contemporary oasis purpose-built to serve as a sanctuary for retreats and immersive experiences with a goal to elevate creativity and consciousness.”

The retreat seems nearly as exclusive as Tranquillum House. According to the website, the retreat has 10 bedrooms, a geodisic yoga dome, pool, firepit, and zen garden. But above all, it honors the fictional setting’s vibe. “The resort itself is such a big character,” director Jonathan Levine told Forbes. “It was perfect with its amazing woods, jungles and beaches, and captured the feeling we were looking for.”

The spa offers wellness retreats, but they’re nothing like Masha’s.

In Nine Perfect Strangers, Masha treats her guests like guinea pigs. She spikes their smoothies with small doses of psilocybin (a hallucinogenic mushrooms), then encourages them to have healing “trips.”

While microdosing is currently being explored as a therapeutic practice, it’s not on Soma’s retreat menu. Soma offers four retreats, including one for meditation that’ll run a couple $3,995 for three days and two nights, and another for de-stressing (called “redesign”). Vedic master and meditation teacher Gary Gorrow runs the retreats, which include meditation, daily yoga classes, ice baths, meals prepared by an Ayurvedic chef, forest walks, and more.

Though the novel is set in Australia, the show was always intended to be filmed and set in California. Then the pandemic hit, and the show could not go on—not as planned, at least. “We were a week away from building all these sets on the Paramount lot in mid-March but we quickly realized that was not possible,” director Jonathan Levine told Newsweek.

Instead of shutting down production, Kidman—who also produced the series—convinced the cast to travel to Australia. At the time, Byron Bay had no cases of COVID-19. “We called everyone, would you be willing to come to Australia? They all said yes,” Kidman told ABC.

Given the last-minute change, Levine said Soma was selected as a filming location only from photos and drone footage, which is highly unusual. “Normally you would go scout a location ten times if you were going to shoot there for 100 days,” he said. Other scenes were filmed in Lune de Sang, a timber plantation that specializes in creating sheds.

The cast had to quarantine for two weeks in Sydney before heading to the coast. At the end of the five-month shoot, Kidman was ready to stay in Byron Bay forever. “I didn’t want to leave, truly,” Kidman told The Age. ‘We were all looking to buy property in Byron Bay. It was one of those things where I think it was almost like being in a dream because we were separate from the rest of the world, working together, in that place for that long a time.”

Soma is accepting reservations for retreats in 2021 and 2022. However, Australia’s borders are currently closed. You may need to find a wellness retreat closer to home—if nine Perfect Strangers hasn’t made you lose your taste for them, that is.
