Where Was Champions Filmed

BBC’s new music drama will debut on our TV screens this evening (July 1). The new eight-part series, Champion, has been described as a ‘celebration of a sound that has long been the beating heart of our culture’.

And the TV series, despite being based in London, has close links to Birmingham. Selly Oak in fact – after Raddlebarn Road cafe, Emma’s Pantry, was transformed into Aria’s for the series.

Emma’s Pantry was painted bright yellow for a Caribbean theme for filming of the TV show last year. The big clue that the cafe had been redecorated for a drama and not a lifestyle show came with the 0207 (London) number over the front door.

Speaking to BirminghamLive in September 2022, Emma’s Pantry owner Osmond Cambridge said: “The series is only filming here occasionally and not for a while again yet because even I haven’t been told. I can’t give anything away about the story. But what I can say is that Emma’s Pantry is still open for business when the cameras are not here.

“I’ve been here for more than ten years and, being a baker by trade, still love baking bread – apart from the (full English) breakfasts and lunches that we serve here, I also supply buns to several local burger takeaways. When I get the time, we also do Caribbean foods, too.”

Champion will premiere on BBC One at 9.15pm on Saturday, July 1, and will air weekly at the same time. But all episodes of the series will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer after the first episode.

The cast features Déja J Bowens joins the cast in her TV debut along with music sensation Ray BLK. Déja plays Vita Champion, while Ray BLK plays Honey. Malcolm Kamulete plays Bosco Champion, while Disney and Harry Potter star Ray Fearon plays Beres Champion.
