One location that Jesse spends a lot of time is the amusement park where he completes his community service. Fans of the movie have probably watched Jesse and Willy interact here and wondered to themselves: where was “Free Willy” filmed?

According to Screen-It, the amusement park they used was called Reino Aventura, located in Mexico City, Mexico. If you want to visit the park for yourself it’s actually Six-Flags Mexico City now, although if you’re hoping to see the titular orca there you won’t find her.

After the movie, fans felt compelled to free the actual orca that was used in filming, named Keiko. They raised funds to eventually have her released into the wild – a happy ending for the movie and for the whale herself. You’ll just have to settle for roller coasters and other rides if you end up visiting Six-Flags Mexico City.

If you thought this town looked familiar, you’d be right. According to Travel Oregon it was filmed in the town of Astoria, Oregon, which was also where “The Goonies” and “Kindergarten Cop” were filmed, among others.

The house where “The Goonies” and “Free Willy” were filmed is now closed to the public, but the town is still as beautiful as it was in the 80s and 90s. They recommend checking out the Astoria Column as seen in the movie, especially because it’s a great place to see a panorama of the surrounding area.

For the identity of some additional “Free Willy” locations, we turn to an article by Film Oblivion. Remember the exterior of the amusement park where Jesse and Willy meet? They filmed this at the Oaks Amusement Park in Portland, which is open to this day.

Just across the street, you can find the house where Jesse’s mentor Randolph, played by August Schellenberg, lived. Now that we’ve covered that, we can move on to the one we’ve all been waiting for: the location where Willy jumped over Jesse at the end of the movie!
