Is I Hate Christmas based on a real story?

No, I Hate Christmas is not based on a true story. Instead, it is based on the Norwegian show Home For Christmas. The plot is focused on Gianna (played by Pilar Fogliati) who is eternally single, despite the fact that her brother is married with twins and that her family are constantly egging her on to find a romantic partner.

In a moment of desperation, she turns around and tells her loved ones that she has a boyfriend and will be bringing him to Christmas, which happens to be in 24 days time. And thus begins a comedic search for the young nurse in a bid to bring someone home to her family for Christmas.

From the first episode, Gianna breaks the fourth wall and tells the audience not to judge her too hard for lying to her family about having a significant other. The following episodes show Gianna meeting men on back to back dates, as well as her work at the hospital. It hasn’t yet been announced if there will be a season 2.

The entirety of the show is filmed in the Veneto region. This popular area of Northern Italy is best-known for its wine production (both red and white varieties), and for being home to the city of Venice, which is one of the most popular destinations the world over.

Chioggia

Most of the film is set in the town of Chioggia, where Gianna and her family live. The seaside town lies to the south of Venice and is a jewel in the bay of Venice thanks to its candy hued homes, endless waterways, and charming architecture.

The opening shot of the series depicts a gondola with life sized figures of Joseph, Mary, and Jesus gliding through the waters of Chioggia at Christmastime (and not Venice as some other articles online state). The city seems even more magical around this time of the year and is definitely a sight to behold.

The opening scene, as well as plenty of the b roll for the film is shot along the Fondamenta Canal Vena. This stunning waterway is one of the most picturesque spots in the city come day or night and slices its way through the very heart of the town before emptying into the Venetian lagoon.

Castello di San Salvatore

The stunning medieval castle of Castello di San Salvatore was built between the 13th and 14th centuries and is part of the Treviso province of the Veneto region. Unfortunately the interior cannot be visited, though the outside is still stunning. In the show, the castle is used as a backdrop for a date between Gianna and Carlo.
