Where Was Mayberry Man Filmed

Randy Gross, a sixth grader at Scipio Elementary, joined his grandmother, Karen EuDaly, and his cousin, Jackson, both of Seymour, to participate as extras the last couple of weekends in the followup TV show series to the 2021 film “Mayberry Man.”

Starring Brett Varvel and Ashley Elaine, “Mayberry Man” follows an arrogant movie star who gets busted for speeding in a small southern town and sentenced to attend Mayberry Fest: a weeklong festival celebrating “The Andy Griffith Show.” Immersed in a modern-day Mayberry, he’s given a chance to discover the true meaning of friendship and family.

Allegedly fans enjoyed the movie-making process so much that they started asking for a sequel, and so “Mayberry Man: The Series,” which was filmed in Danville, IN, will pick up where the movie left off.

Danville is part of Hendricks County, located west of Indianapolis. A Mayberry Cafe serving home-cooked food “just like Aunt Bee put on the table for Andy and Opie Taylor on the Andy Griffith Show” can be found on Main Street in Danville. Many scenes from the “Mayberry Man” movie were shot at the cafe, the Hendricks County Courthouse, former governor’s residence in Meridian Kessler and Conner Prairie.

Karen EuDaly, Randy’s grandmother, originally found out about the “Mayberry Man” movie from a newspaper article and wanted to be involved, eventually being picked to be the wife of a featured extra, which meant she was in numerous scenes in the background.

After the movie premiered, Karen followed the movie on social media. When the followup series was announced, she knew she wanted to be involved again and thought it would be fun for her grandsons to be in the series with her since they watch “The Andy Griffith Show.”

Randy and Jackson both said of the filming experience that it was fun, but Randy added that it was also tiring. Randy enjoyed interacting with the tribute artists and Jackson enjoyed the jokes made by characters Barney and Gomer during the end of the Mayberry Festival scene.

Karen said she and her grandsons are not featured extras “but there might be some close fun scenes we will be in. I know we were in the background for a scene on the street and then in the audience for the Christmas and the ending of Mayberry Days festival. Of course we don’t know if all those will make the show.”

A streaming platform for “Mayberry Man: The Series” is said to be determined in 2023, so keep your eye out for this locally filmed, family-friendly show in the coming year!
