Did they film “My Cousin Vinny” in Alabama?
While the movie is said to take place in Alabama, many movies aren’t actually shot on-location. That means we’re stuck asking the question: where was “My Cousin Vinny” filmed?
In the case of this South of the Mason Dixon movie, the filmmakers still chose a location not too far from Alabama. They shot the entirety of the movie in Georgia. Director Jonathan Lynn explains that decision in a recent interview with Rolling Stone: “I went down there by myself with the location scout, and we just drove around Georgia to find places to shoot. It had to be Georgia instead of Alabama, where the movie takes place, because they had a film crew there and equipment. Alabama wasn’t set up for filmmaking.”

Lawyers love the movie because of its accurate depiction of what it looks like inside of a courtroom. Fred Gwynn in his final role is phenomenal as the judge who has little patience for the antics of Vinny. The courthouse itself is a sight to behold. The establishing shots show off the neo-classical design and hexagonal clock tower.
According to Savannah Now, this is the historic Jasper County Courthouse. As realistic as the interior shots looked of the courtroom, they weren’t shot in the courthouse itself. They filmed all of the interior scenes in a warehouse in a nearby town.
Not shooting in a place like Hollywood does have its disadvantages, though. The warehouse apparently had a tin roof which made it impossible to shoot during rain storms.
Another filming location that lends to the credibility of the movie is the prison where Bill and Stan await their fate. This is one location you are going to want to try to avoid if you can. After all, it’s still a functioning women’s prison! According to Savannah Now, this is the Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto.
