The new season of “Fargo,” which stars Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman, follows two Kansas City crime bosses who broker an uneasy peace in 1950 by swapping sons. The new series “Utopia” is about a group of geeks desperate to get their hands on a graphic novel they believe predicts global crises.
They are set in different locations and eras, but both TV shows filmed in the Chicago area. The eight-episode shoot for “Utopia,” which premiered Friday on Amazon Prime, wrapped a year ago. The cast and crew of “Fargo,” scheduled to premiere at 8 p.m. Sunday on FX, were almost done filming Season 4’s 11 episodes when the coronavirus hit. They resumed shooting in Chicago last month and finished the remaining scenes.

“Gone Girl” author and Northwestern University graduate Gillian Flynn adapted “Utopia” from a British television drama. The story is now set in Chicago, and several cast members have ties to the city. Chicagoan John Cusack is Dr. Kevin Christie, a billionaire CEO intent on solving some of the world’s greatest problems, even if major sacrifice is needed. His most loyal employee is Arby, played by Christopher Denham, a Marist High School graduate.
Rainn Wilson, a graduate of New Trier High School, is an unappreciated scientist who gets entangled with Christie. His office scenes were filmed at the University of Illinois at Chicago in May and July 2019, according to a university spokesman.
The geeks, meanwhile, meet at a convention held at Indian Lakes Hotel in Bloomingdale and hide in several Chicago-area homes as they attempt to decipher the clues tucked in the novel. Chicago native Desmin Borges plays eccentric worrywart Wilson Wilson, whose house is in the 5900 block of West Midway Park in the Austin community on the West Side. Wilson has an unfortunate run-in there with Arby — and a spoon.
There’s quite a bit of violence on the show. There’s a brutal scene on the fourth episode at a home in the 5800 block of West Race Avenue in Austin. The action also unfolds in the Loop, on the “L” and outside the Chicago Theatre — which gives a nod to Flynn by advertising “Gone Girl The Musical.”
Harold Washington Library is used as a meeting spot. Scenes were not filmed inside the library, but the exterior was lit “up to make sure it was prominently featured,” said Patrick Molloy, Chicago Public Library director of government and public affairs.

‘Fargo’
“Fargo” was based at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios on the West Side. The show filmed in the city and the suburbs with several spots made to look like they belong in the 1950s.
A home in the 1900 block of West Lunt Avenue in Rogers Park was transformed into a mortuary run by a character played by singer-songwriter-violinist and Lake Forest native Andrew Bird. Olde Western Avenue in Blue Island serves as the show’s main thoroughfare, with businesses such as Spud’s All Time diner, Denton Dry Cleaning and Morton’s Liquor (where beer is 15 cents).
Filming also took place at Union Station and in the Uptown area, Old Norwood Park neighborhood, Oak Park and Riverside.
