The Wheel of Time 1.4 “The Dragon Reborn”: <3
So much that I loved about this episode!
- Logain’s introduction. The scene didn’t go in either of the directions I was expecting, so that was great – fitting, for Logain, to subvert expectations. It also sets up the rest of the episode so well to meet Logain on his own terms, before we see the Aes Sedai discussing what his fate should be.
- Perrin’s conversation with Ila about the Way of the Leaf was really poignant, and so clearly resonated with Perrin. Thom’s conversation Rand about Owyn was similarly poignant.
- Birgitte reference! An adorable Birgitte reference! *squee* (My sibling was very confused by my reaction. “Is that… plot relevant?”)
But mostly, I love that this episode was about Moiraine, Lan and Nynaeve (three of my favourite characters!) and the Aes Sedai.

“And the Amyrlin Seat?”“Still seated. Not any fonder of Moiraine, though. I heard her threaten to fetch you two home personally.“
The Eye of the World isn’t accurately representative of the huge role Aes Sedai play in the rest of the story, so it’s smart to introduce that sooner. I’m impressed by how much info they touch upon, and it’s interesting, and sometimes unexpectedly entertaining, rather than info-dumpy! Shielding and gentling; references to the Amyrlin and novices; different Ajahs; relationships between Aes Sedai and their Warders.

And it’s much better than the Meanwhile back at the ranch White Tower scenes I thought we might get, because we get to see the perspective Nynaeve is developing.
Moiraine’s scenes continue to be A+. Seeing her channel! Her interactions with the other Aes Sedai! Her interactions wwith Lan!
“I shouldn’t have had a drink. You always get emotional when I drink.”
Also. Nynaeve. Her attitude. Her guardedness around Aes Sedai, versus how she is with Lan (and the other warders). Lan’s protectiveness! Seeing the battle from Nynaeve’s perspective. Seeing the aftermath from her perspective!

At first I wondered if that last scene was too dramatic, Nynaeve being so powerful already, but actually, I think the contrast will be very interesting if we’re now going to see Nynaeve struggling to do it again. Struggling but knowing what she should be capable of. Excellent.
I’m massively fond of Nynaeve and Lan’s interactionsin the book and I’d be so delighted to see any of those scenes on screen, but thus far I’m enjoying the fanfic.
“You’re not exactly what I thought you were, al’Lan Mandragoran.” “And what was that?”“A lapdog with two legs.”
The only thing I really didn’t like about this episode was what happened to the Grinwell children. While I appreciate that the show wasn’t at all gratuitous about it, it was too, too dark. 🙁
Since last episode focused on Rand and Mat, and this one was more Nynaeve (and Lan and Moiraine) centric, I expect that next time there will be dramatic developments for Perrin and Egwene.
