THE beloved bookstore chain Barnes & Noble was among the retail giants that closed dozens of shops last year.
Execs shuttered 34 outlets nationwide – but the figure was tiny compared to chains such as Bed Bath & Beyond and Tuesday Morning.

But, there appears to be fresh hope as plans for store openings have been announced.
A Barnes & Noble store in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City is closing on January 14 after 16 years.
The outlet is closing because the landlord wants to redevelop the premises, per an Instagram post shared last month.
“It has been our honor and privilege to be your bookseller here in Tribeca for the last 16 years,” store workers said.
“We’ve loved being part of this neighborhood and are doing everything we can to find a new location.”
A Barnes & Noble store in Naperville, Illinois – a suburb of Chicago – will close for the final time on January 21.

But plans are already in place to open a new 16,000 square-feet store, per The Daily Herald.
The new store, located in a shopping center in Oswego – about an hour southwest of Chicago – will open its doors in spring 2024.
The Barnes & Noble store had been a constant in downtown Naperville for 25 years.
Plus, a new bookstore will be opening in Brentwood, California – about an hour northeast of San Francisco – per The Mercury News.
Bookworms will be treated to new bookrooms featuring different genres, as well as a cafe.
“The flow of the rooms encourages browsing and is intended to take you on a seamless journey throughout the store with the room locations and adjacencies transitioning through a series of categories relating to each other,” Barnes & Noble spokesperson Deborah Hanks told the outlet.
Barnes & Noble also added to its portfolio of stores by opening a new outlet in Bridgehampton, New York – 30 minutes away from Montauk on Long Island – in December, as reported by The Easthampton Star.
The chain opened additional stores in Jonesboro, Arkansas – about an hour northwest of Memphis, Tennessee – and Flower Mound, Texas – about 30 minutes northwest of Dallas – in 2023 as well.

Last year, bosses announced plans to open 30 new stores and CEO James Daunt said he’s excited about the chain’s future.
“Right now, we’ve seen – over the last two years – tremendous sales growth at Barnes & Noble,” he told local news outlet NY1 in November.
“We could not be more optimistic. And I think it’s just that our stores are fun now.”
Daunt said shoppers love to come into the store and buy physical books.
The businessman described bookshops as places of discovery, per The Guardian.
The U.S. Sun has approached Barnes & Noble for comment.
While execs at Barnes & Noble are optimistic, major chains have shuttered hundreds of stores.
Bed Bath & Beyond closed its remaining 866 stores while more than 400 Tuesday Morning outlets went to the wall, per data compiled by Coresight Research.
Renowned brands such as 7-Eleven, Rite Aid, and CVS also closed hundreds of stores last year.
